Tne progress of industry, agriculture, transportation, capital con~truc-
tion, retail turnover of goods, construction of public buildings, and health
orgeaizF-'~a during the third quarter of 1951 is sa follows, acenrding to data

The volume of industrial production, excluding 'local industry during the
third quarter of 1951, i.n comparison with the same period in 1950, has increased
15.4 percent, and the volume of industrial production Suring the first 9 months
of 1951 has increased 18 percent in comparison with the same period last year.
The general industrial plan for the thrill quarter was fulfilled 95.9 Percent
because not all ministries have completely fulfilled the production program,

Daring the third quarter the plan was exceeded for malty proaucts important
for the national economy such ae ores, cast 'iron, reinforced. concrete, lead,
tractor-drawn plows, coke, carbide, cement, paper, soap, woolen cloth, sugar,
vegetr'~le oils, canned goods, fish, and alcohol.

II. AGRICULTURE
As s result of the efforts ..P members of farm workers' cooperatives and
individual farmers in the proper a-ul timely fulfillment of the sawing plan and
the application oP modern agricultural methods during the current year, Bulgaria
had a rich harvest of e11 agricultural products, especially grain, industrial
plants, and fodder. The crops were gathered in a much shorter time than was
the case is previous years. As a consequence, the plan for grain deliveries wen
fulfilled is time by all okrugs. The necessary agricultural products for feed-
ing t?~ pon^lation were available, industry was supplied with raw materials, and
sufflcieat quantities of the above products were stockp;led..
State farms sag farm workers' cooperatives obtained considerab]y higher
yields than individual farmers. The members of farm workers' cooperatlves had
higher incomes than individual farmers. The reserve and seed funds of fa-~
workers' cooperatives grew larger. During the third quarter of 1951, farm work-
ers' cooperatives built twice as many stables, silos, and barns than during the
same quarter last year, By 15 October 1951; the number of farms workers' co-.
operatives increased to 2,725, They included 53.3 Percent of ~11~ peasant
households and owned 47.5 percent of the total arable land in Bulgaria.
By 1 October 1951, there were 117 machine tractor stations in Bulgaria.
In comparison xith the same period is 1950, the tractor park of the machine

Bulgaria imported 550 combines from the USSR. Up to i uc:o~uer 1y71, 'L.b percent
more seeds xere cleaned than up to 1 October 1950, and two times more rye and

above accomplishments, the Ministry of Agriculture lags behind in the fulfillment
of the autumn sawing plan,
The plan is tan-.._.tometers for transporting freight by railroad during the
third quarter of lyjl vas fulfilled 100 percent, whic3 is an increase of 8,3
percent in comparison with the third quarter of 1950.
On an average, the 24-hour loading of freight cars during the third quarter
of 1951 xas increased 7,8 percent in comparison with the same quarter of 1950.
The plan for transporting freight by xater 3urinq the third quarter of 1y51
xas fulfilled 126.7 percent, which is an increase of 47.6 percent in comparison
with the third quarter of 1950.
The plan in ton-kilometers for transporting freigh+, by motor vehicles dur-
ing the third quarter of 1951 was fulfilled 101.7 percent, which is an increase
of 11 percent in comparison with tY.e same quarter of last year.
The plan for capital construction xas fulfilled 104.1 percent during the
third. quarter of 1951. The amount of sll capital constructions during the third
quarter of 1951 vas 43.4 percent greater than during the same quarter of last
year.
;p to 1 October 1951, many important pro3ecta were put in operation, ir-
clvding the "Tuzha" Hydroelectric Power Plant; the "V13ima" Hydroelectric Power
Plant, the expanded "Dimitrovo" Steam-Heat and Electric Power Plant, a flotation
installation, a section of a cotton-spinning mill, five hemp-processing mills,
230 main power-line posts, 461 kilometers of long distance high-tension power
lines, 468 kilometers of short distance low-tension power 1lnea, and the irriga-
tion system of the Brushlyan Valley,
Magy new homes were built, and the construction of 15 reading-room build-
ings, two broadcasting stations, many school buildings, boarding houses for stu-
dents, hospitals, a children's clinic, and an antituberculosis institute xere
completed,
V. TURNOVER OF RETAII, GOODS
During the third quarter of this year, 98 model stores were established in
cities.

same period in 1950:

During the current year, over 1,100,000 etudes have attended primary,
secondary, vocational, and trade schools, as well as colleges is Bulgaria.
Up to 1 October 1951, kindergartens xere attended by 230,000 children, ia-
clnding 180,000 Eton villages.
By 1 October 1951, 68 more motlon-picture theaters (67 more is villages
alone) vote is ezieteace than during the some period last year. During the
third garter of 1951, over 10,400,000 persons have attended these theaters.
By the end of the third quarter of 1951, the number of radio receivers in-
creased by 32,638 (including 16,798 is villages), ea compared to the same period
last year, and the number of wired radios, by 29,317.
