WOMEN TO WORK IN GDR URANIUM MINES
The Portuguese news agency ANI, in a dispatch datelined Berlin, 22 March
1952, states that according to information of an official nature, the first
women's brigades are soon to begin working in the Johanngeorgengtadt uranium
mines in the GDR (German Democratic Republic). The Ministry of Labor of the
GDR has recently authorized women to work in the mine pits.
It is to be noted that some miners who have escaped from these mines and
have sought asylum in the Western sectors of Berlin have declared that working
conditions in Johanngeorgenstadt are unbearable even for strong, young men.
