COMMUNISTS STRENGTHEN DEFENSES IN SOUTH CHINA; IDENTIFIES VOLUNTEERS TO AID VIED MINK TO DESTROY PART OF SHIH-CH'I--MACAO HIGHWAY -- Hong Kong, Kung-shang Jih-pao, 7 Apr 52 At a recent military conference held in Chung-Shan, Kwangtung, and at- tended by Tseng Sheng, a former staff officer of the Kvangtung-Kvangsi Column, it was decided to narrow the east section of the Shih-ch'i--Macao highway from Shih-ch'1 to Hsiao-Chia-ts'un. This action was taken because it was felt that the military strength along the South China coastal area was too weak to with- stand any attack in event of a war. The workers for this project ari to be drafted from the local areas. CHINESE COMMUNISTS BEGIN TO TEAR UP HIGHWAY -- Hong Kong, Kung-shang Jih-pao, 14 Apr 52 On 10 April 1952, the Chinese Communists began to tear up the eastern sec- tion of the Shih-ch'i--Macao Highway from Nan-lan-hsu to Ta-ao-ch'i. KWANGTUNG CONSTRUCTING TWO AIRFIELDS -- Hong Kong, Kung-shang Jih-pao, 8 Apr 52 The Huang-wu-wei airfield of Shih-lung is being enlarged and antiaircraft defenses are being installed. It is also reported that an airfield is now be- ing built between Chang-p'ing and Heng-li. These fields are being improved and constructed to supplement the Shao-chiao airfield at Hu-men. Plans are also being made to build emergency airstrips along the Canton--Shen-chun Rail- way. CANTON STEENiGTHENS =1 AYR DEFENSE -- Hong Kong, Kung-Shang Jih-pao, 13 Apr 52 (Chung-lion She) -- The Communist force at Canton has installed several antiaircraft guns in the vicinity -f the Chi-nien Pei (Monument) and Wu-ts'eng Lou on Kuan-yin Shan. These positions have 'een designated as restricted areas. FA-SEAN, KWANGTUNG, ADOPTS AIR DEFENSE MEASURES -- Hong Kong, Kung-shang Jib- pao .5 Apr 52 Nan-hai ,:lien -- On 10 April 1952, the Fa-shan police instructed the resi- dents, as well as all government agencies, public buildings, schools, etc., to paint the exterior of their buildings a brownish-grey color as a defensive mea- sure against air raids. TROOPS DEPLOYED ALONG KWANGTUNG COASTAL AREA AND RR LINES -- Hong Kong, Kung- shang Jih-pao, 9 Apr 52 Canton, 7 April -- At present, Yeh Chien-ying's regular troops are sta- tioned along the coastal area and the railway lines in Kwangtung. The respon- sibility for local security has thus been imposed upon the understaffed public security forces of the local areas. For this reason, a number of the youths who will sign up for military duties are to be allocated to the various public security agencies to meet their personnel requirements. CHINESE COMMUNIST FORCES ENTER VINP NAM -- Hong Kong, Kung-shang Jih-pao, 13 Apr 52 (Chung-lien She) -- Reliable information from Nan-ping identifies the first group of Chinese Communist forces which entered Viet Nam as the follow- ing: P'eng Ming-chih's (1) Lnumbers in parentheses refer to appended characters force of 10,000 men, of the Fifteenth Army Group, Fourth Field Army, and Chung Wei's (2) force numbering 80,000 men of Chen Man-yuan's (3) Thirteenth Army Group. The decision to send a Chinese Communist Force into Viet Nam was made, it is reported, at a secret conference, which was attended by some 160 military officers and which was presided over by Teng Hua, who is in charge of the Sup- port Viet Minh Volunteers. HO CHI MINH REQUESTS HOSPITAL FACILITIES -- Hong Kong, Kung-shang Jib-pao, 12 Apr 52 T'ai-pei, 11 April (Chung-lien She) -- It is reported that Ho Chi Minh has requested the Chinese Communist authorities to establish hospital and medical facilities in Yunnan and Kwangsi to take care of Viet Minh soldiers. This re- quest was made by Ho to protect disabled Viet Minh soldiers from the severe bombings of the French Air Force. During the past 2 weeks, approximately 2,000 disabled Viet Minh soldiers have been transferred and hospitalized in the hos- pitals located at Meng-tzu, Wen-ahan, and Yuan-chiang in Yunnan. It has been further reported that hospital facilities are also being set up in Kwangsi.
