WILL EQUIP SHIPS WITH RADAR
STARTS NEW SERIES OF SHIPS -- Split, Slobodna Dalmscija, 24 Feb 52
In 1952, the Brodogradiliste "3 Maj" ("3 MaJ" Shipyard) is to begin con-
struction of a third series of transoceanic ships of the Ucka type, but dif-
fering in tonnage and superstructure. The deadweight tonnage of the new ships
is to be 4,900 tons, or 700 tons more than the Ucka. They will not have accom-
modations for passengers, but will have a deeper draught.
The shipyard is negotiating with the Jugoslavenska Linijska Plovidba
(Yugoslav Shipping Line) for the construction of tramp steamers of lesser
tonnage.
Twenty naval craft are under construction at the shipyard. The most im-
portant of these is the Avala, which has been already launched, and the Dinara
and Romanija, which are to he launched sometime ih 1952. A series of small
coastal freighters with a deadweight tonnage of 650 tons each has also been
started. Four of these are under construction, and several more are to be
constructed. Several tugboats and other ships are also ender construction.
A good deal of the shipyard's work consists of repairing and overhauling
Yugoslav ships. It is now reconstructing the Esterina, which is to be put into
operation by the end of June. General overhaul work is also being done on
three transoceanic liners and one coastal ship.

steamer of 1,726 gross registered tons, which is to be put in operation by
the beginning. of the 1952 tourist season. Work is being completed on the
Vojvodina, a transoceanic ship with a deadweight tonnage of about 5,000 tons,
and it is planned that it will begin making trip: to northern Europe during
the first half of 1952.

This shipyard is making general repairs on several ships which are to be
delivered to the merchant marine in 1952. It is also completing general re-
pairs on several transoceanic liners and coastal ships, and making minor re-
pairs on a number of smaller vessels. It is planned to have the enterprise
undertake the modertization of the Mornar, formerly the Karadjordje passenger
coastal ship which he "Brodospas" Poduzece ("Brodospas" Enterprise) is to
raise off Zlarin Island.
The Brodogradiliste "Uljanik" ("Uljanik" Shipyard) in Pula is constructing'
in drydock six passenger coastal ships, three of which are to be put in opera-
tion during the 1952 tourist season. These :re motor ships of the Opatija type,
with a gross registered tonnage of 500 gross tons and a speed of 15 knots per
hour, able to accamodate 700-750 passengers.
Other smaller Yugoslav shipyards are building and repairing a considerable
number of small ships and motor sailing vessels for coastal shipping.
SHIPYARD APPLIES NEW METHOD IN SHIPBUILDING -- Zagreb, Borba, 22 Mar 52
Rijeka, 21 March -- The Brodogradiliste "3 Maj" ("3 Maj" Shipyard) in
Rijeka has begun construction of a series of coastal ships of about 600 tons
deadweight tonnage. These are to be constructed by a preassembly system
similar to the prefabricated method used in building construction. This
method of construction is not only cheaper and more rapid, but results in
more durable ships.
By this method, which is to be used for the first time in this shipyard,
most of the construction is finished in workshops where entire units are pre-
fabricated, then hoisted by crane to the ship framework.
In the near future, the shipyard is to use this method in the construction
of transoceanic ships,
YUGOSLAV SHIPS TO BE EQUIPPED WITH RADAR -- Split, Slobodna Dalmacija, 2 Feb 52
To date, the motor ship Slovenija has been the only Yugoslav ship equipped
with radar, which was removed frc Rednik fmotor ship. Soon, radar equip-
ment is to be installed on the motor ships Rijeka, Pula, Ucka, and Zadar, anri
the transoceanic liners Hrvatska and Crna Gora, and possibly on the Srbija and
Makedonija.
It is estimated that more than 300,000 dinars in foreign exchange will be
required for the purchase and installation of each radar installation.
