THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
This report presents a list of leading Rumanian scientists and technicians
who have contributed to a new Rumanian technical lexicon, Lexiconul hn
Roman (available in CIA). Volume I appeared in 1949; Volume II, in 1950; and
Volume III, in 1951. Volume TV is to be published in 1952.
The introduction to the lexicon discusses the purpose of the work, as
follows: "In Autumn 1947, a collective of specialists was organized by the
ASIT (Association of Engineers and Technicians) for the preparation of the
lexicon. The purpose of the work was to disseminate science and technology
throughout the Rumanian People's Republic. The spread of knowledge is one
of the principal means of developing trained personnel needed for the expan-
sion of industry. Gheorghiu-Dej declared that'toe problem of raising the
qualification of workers and the creation of new cadre, of technicians and
specialists is one of our chief concerns. It becomes a vital question in the
development of the economy of our country! There has been a lack of uniform-
ity in technical and industrial terms as a consequence of the former capital-
ist competition. A lexicon containing uniform terms will not only standard-
ize terminology, but will make it easier for the people of Rumania to become
acquainted with the scientific achievements of the USSR."
ASIT is apparently taking an increasingly active part in all Rumanian
scientific and technical activity. Up to now, it has assisted economic min-
istries in the preparation and publication of their specialized periodicals
such as Electricitatea, of the Ministry of Electrical Encrgy; Petrol si Gaze,
of the Ministry of Petroleum and Coal Industries; Textile, one of the organs
of the Ministry of Light Industry; Metallurgia, of the Ministry of Metallur-
gical and Chemical Industries; Industria Constructiilor, of the Ministry of
Constructions, and others. ASIT also carries out research within enterprises
to test and improve materials.
