The Sinkiang People's Publishing Rouse is making all-out efforts to translate
and publish. in the minority nationality languages of Northwest China the Selected
Works of Mao Tse-tung, propaganda literature of the Rdsist America, Aid'Borea ve-
men , and numerous textbooks, the Sian Chun-chung JIh-pao reported on 30 March 1952.
According to the report, 182 different books on politics, scientific socialism,
natural science, literature, and arts, totaling over 2 million copies, were published
in the Uighur, Kazakh, and Mongolian languages.
A day earlier, the paper reported that 186,400 copies of 28 different primary
apd middle-school textbooks had been translated and published in the minority nation-
ality languages by the Sinkiang People's Publishing House during the past 2 years.
Pertinent Portions of the Chun-chung Jih-pao report of 30 March 1952 follpv:
After the establishment of the Sinkiang People's Publishing House a Jear ago,
it systematically organized the job of translating and publishing the Selected Works
of Mao Tse-tung In the Uighur, Kazakh, and Mongolian languages.
Up to now seven selections from the revised edition of the first voli.ma of the
Selected Works of Mao Tse-t have been translated into Uighur and published sepa-
rately under six titles two short selections were combiied under one title).. These
are now being translated into Mongolian.
Other writings of Chairman Mao have been translated into Uighur; Kazakh, and
Mongolian. Among these translations, 56 are in Uighur, of which 15 have been pub-
lished; 22 are in Kazakh, of which four have been published; and one has been trans-
lated and published in Mongolian.

While the writings of Chairman Mao have been translated-and published, there
has also bean a coordinated mass publication of the literature of the Resist America,
Aid Korea Movement; Suppression of Counterrevolutionaries Movement; and Rent-Reduction
Movement in the minority nationality languages. To meet local conditions in Sinkiang
a number of serialized picture books were published.
To solve the textbook problem for primary and middle schools, the Sinkiang People's
Publishing House and the provincial office of education jointly translated and pub-
lished in Uighur, Kazakh, and Mongolian 450,000 copies of Workers 1and Farm -s Textbook
on Character /ord7 Learning for the winter study program.
During 1951, a total of 2.06 million copies of 182 different books dealing with
political policies, current affairs, scientific socialism, natural science, work ex-
periences, literature and art were edited and published in Chinese, Uighur, Kazakh,
and Mongolian.
A semimonthly periodical, Sinkiang Propaganda Worker is being published for the
purpose of coordinating political work, directing and promoting the various movements
in t'?.e countryside and in the livestock-farming areas, and publicizing the policy
orders of the Chinese Communist Party and the government.
The Chun-chung oih-pao of 29 March 1952 reported the following:
There is an extreme shortage of textbooks in the&minority nationality languages
in all the provinces of Northwest China, and this has c:.used great difficulties in
the minority nationality schools. Since the liberation, the culture and education
agencies under the Northwest China Military and Administrative Committee have ener-
getically translated textbooks into the various minority nationality languages and
have achieved some success in this field.
C 'Th cult'ire and aA"cation office of Sinkiang Province, during the past 2 years
950 - 1951 helpedthe Sinkiang People's Publishing House translate and publish
186,400 copies of 2d different textbooks in the following languages:
Mongolian -- nine language and mathematics textbooks for primary schools and
ten mathematics, language, nature study, geography, and "common knowledge" textbooks
for higher primary schools.
Uighur -- two history and geography textbooks for higher primary schools and
three Chinese geography, modern Chinese history, and political science textbooks
for junior middle schools.
Kazakh -- two history and geography textbooks for higher primary schools and
two modern Chinese history and political science textbooks for junior middle schools.
Three Kazakh textbooks each on the history of the Chinese revolution, Chinese
geography, and reference materials on education, and two Uighur textbooks on refer-
ence materials on education and geography are still to be set in type.
