1951 SOVIET PRODUCTION FIGURES
FOR PIG IRON, STEEL, COAL. PETROLEUM
On 9 February 1946, at the meeting of the Council of the People's Commissars,,
Stalin said that,, to prepare for the materialistic needs of the Communist society,
the USSR must produce 50 million tons of pig iron, 60 million tons of steel, 500
million tons of coal, and 60 million tons of petroleum annually. He also predicted
that it would require three successive five-year plans to attar these goals.
However, the 1951 production figures of the basic industries show that the
people of the USSR have already made great progress toward attaining these goals
during the past 6 years, and that they may possibly attain these goals before the
target date set by Stalin in February 1946. During 1951, USSR basic industries
produced the following amounts of pig iron, steel, coal, and petroleum: pig iron,
22,059,000 tons, steel, 31,357,05C tons; coal, 281,469,600 tons; and petroleum,
42,358:400 tons.
The petroleum output of the USSR is increasing at the rate of 4,500,000 tons
annually: therefore, all she has to do is to maintain this pace for a few more
;rears to attain the goal of an annual output of 60 million tons.
Actually, the output of USSR basic industries is higher each year than the
previous year. It can be verified by the reports recently released by the USSR
which stated that the output of these industries for the first quarter 1952 was
16 percent higher than that for the same period of 1951.
