ON ENOCH-QUINN CONFESIONS
Peiping, 14 May (Hsin-hua) -- Chao Chung-yao, one of China's nuclear physi-
r?,iste and a research fellow in the China Academy of Sciences, in an interview
with one of our reporters concerning the aggressor US's preparations for the use
of atomic weapons, made the following statement:
"I was extremely incensed on reading the testimony of the American POWs,
Kenneth Lloyd Enoch and John Quinn, corcerning their participation in the in-
human germ warfare initiated by the US aggressors. Their testimony perfectly
proves that American imperialism not only disregarded the firm opposition of
the people of the whole world against the criminal acts of carrying on biolog-
ical warfare in Korea and China, but it also reveals a further step in their
evil designs, namely, their preparations for the use of the atomic weapons.
"The war of aggression against Korea, initiated by American imperialism,
which has been going on for the past 2 years, under the firm blows of the Korean
and Chinese people and due to the condemnation of the lovers of peace throughout
the world, has met with irreparable defeat. Nov the American aggressors, dis-
regarding the opposition of the people of the whole world and undaunted by the
dictates of righteousness, not only proceed with their inhuman germ warfare of
extermination, but are contemplating the use of another instrument, atomic
weapons.
"Although atomic weapons have a certain destructive power, yet under dis-
cerning conn~deration, it is seen that they have no power of intimidation. As
in the case of biological weapons, they cannot save American imperialism in
Korea from defeat. If American imperialism dares to begin to use atomic weapons,
we can positively affirm that biological weapons, atomic weapons, and the ag-
gressors themselves will all be smashed in the presence and by the invincible
power of the people of the whole world."

Following this statement, Professor Chao said.
"In the testimony ff Enoch and Quina g'.ven, the A rays, B rays and C rays
mentioned, spoken of in Chinese by the use of the three words, "chia," "1," and
ping, when expressed by using Greek letters, are called Alpha rays, Bata rays,
and'Censm rays= The- term translated "radiant action" should read "radioactiv-
ity." The reference by Quinn to A rays and B rays should be vmderatood to refer
to, beat 5i7 radiation." This kind of technical knowledge is something with wsich
the ordinazy military man is not familiar, and the said POW could not re..mber
the matter perfectly; and this accounts for his mistate."
This is the first reference to statements concerning nuclear weapons attributed
to Bnool4 and Quinn which has been noted in the alleged testimony, letters, and
broadcasts that have appeared in the Chinese press available in CIA;J
