Market shortages due to rain brought forth much specu- lation from rubber circles as to the quantity of rubber available to Communist China. The Polis;, vessel Helineki arrived in Coluebo 27 April and began loading rubber for Communist China.(1) The Helinski was to sail for Take Bar in 2 . weeks with E,600 tons of rubber (2), but, after a prolo;fged layover of 3 weeks, sailed with only 4,7OO tonn.(3) This was Ceylon's sixth shipment of rubber to Count China since the UN implemented the embargo,(4) In the latter part of May, anothor Polish vessel, the Jednosc Rebotnicza (2,O03 tons) (5), was in Colombo to load rubber. for China. The Chinese Co xanists attempted to procure 6,500 tone. (6) The Jednosc Rabotnicza was chartered'to' take the seventh shipment of over 6,000 tons (7), but, as rubber exporters re- ported the availability of only 2,000-3,000 tone, the agent for the ship indicated that he also would. take 3,000 tons of cottcp..(6) Late in June, news wasdis- patched free Co_unbo to the effect that the Jednoac Rabotnicza was rcteduled to sail 29 June with 4,000 tons of Ceylonese rubber for Communist Cbinr..,iB) By bidding higher then the current market prices, Communist China'malntmined position as Ceylon's sole customer is rubber during May and June (4). .. bought up all the rubber available, including saokled sheets, low-grade raibber, and latex.
