Increase in Cotton Acreage and Harvest
According to Pigures of the Ber11n newspsper Auasenhsadels Rachrichten,
only stout 700 hectares oP cotton a yesr were pleated in Rumania up to 1935;
in 1945, the cotton planting area increased to 40,000 hectares, and in 1951
to 150,000 hectares. The 1951 cotton harvest was 147.3 percent greater than
that of 1950. By the cad oP the Five-Year Plan the cotton growing area ie
to comprise 3CA,000 hectares,(1)
The same paper reported that cotton acreage is Constants Raioa Constants
Regions, was to be 104 nerceaL greater in 1952 than in 1951, and ttiat more than
8,000 lndependent peasants were erpected to plant 3,5 times ae much cotton in
1952 as in 1951.(1) ,
Pro ass and Acnievements of Cotton Farms in Bucharest Re lone
The Bucharest aexspaper Vista Capitalei during August reported the follow-
ing developments in cotton growing in Bucharest Regiune:
Proper care and methods aided cotton growing in Bucharest Regiune, xhicb
raises more cotton than aqy other regions in Rumaaia,(3) The T. D. Iysenko
method xas applied in 1951 and 1952? By using this method, the 0.'?.va Bancic State
Farm is Piatra, for example, obtained 1,200 kilograms of cotton per hectare,
while independent holdings achieved only 400_500 kilograms per hectare. Col-
lectives is Cocoai, Olteaita P.aioa, obtained an average of 960 kilograms per
hectare, while independent peasants obtained 350-400,(4)

Unfavorable weather in 1952 necessitated the resowing of cotton is many
areas of Bucharest Regiune.(3)
Conditions in individual raions of Bucharest Regiune were as follows:
Calarasi Raioa reported a particularly favorable crop, with the following out-
standing collectives: the Filimon Sarbu Collective in Calaraei-Vechi, the
1 May collective in Cuz-Node, the Constantin David collective in Coslogeni,
a collective !n Cacomeanca, and the Drum Nou collective in Coconi. In Lehliu
Raton, the I. C. Frimu state farm lagged behind in the application of the
agrominimum and failed to carry out the required number of cultivations. The
Dalga state farm vas on schedule in this reepect.(3) The General Directorate
for Cotton Cultivation expressed concern for the lack of labor force in state
farms in Dalga, and on the I. C. Frimu state farm. The agrominimum vsa not
satisfactory in Lupsanu.(5)
In Olteaita Raion, the Manaetirea state farm failed to apply the
agrominimum. However, collectives 1n this raion sur_ceeded in cultivating
cotton three and four times.(5)
In Zimnicea Raion, the Olga Dancic state farm in Piatra was particularly
ercceasfui is overcoming the _abor problem, which constituted a di3ficulty
in the entire cotton area.(3) State farms in Piatra and collectives in Coa-
teati applied the agrominimum well,(5)
In Cazanestl, Slobozia Raion, sad Fratesti, Giurgiu Raioa, cotton vas
cultivated three or four times by collectives.(5} The agromiaimum yes
eucceesf~il. at the Steagul Rosu collective in Gaaeesa, Brsaesti Raion (6), and
in Baltati, Rosiorii-de-Veda Raioa. Ln Alexandria Raion state Parma grey
814 hectares of cotton, collectives 31 hectares, and independent peaeante
700 hectares,(7)
Qther state farms which vere applying the agros:lnimum included those is
Roaeti (3), Prundu, with 150 hectares (8), and the Vista Pour collective in
Fratesti.(9) State Perms in Toporu and Uzunu permitted their cotton Fields
to to overgrown by weeds.(5}
Five TOZ Yor raising cotton and studying new methods of cotton growing vere
formed in Chirnogl, 0].tenita, Luica, Negoiestl, and Soldanu in Olteaita Ruioa.(3)
Results of 1~2 Cotton Crop
The 1952 fall cotton crop was reported in an article in Le Massager
d'Athenes to be unsatisfactory, According to this Athens newspaper, the Rumanian
government recognized that peasants raising cotton vere paid too little and
too irregular]y sad, therefore, it permitted peasants to keep a portion of
their crops as partial compeneatioa.(2)
