REPORT NO.
Experiments have been conducted in Bulgaria with the aim of establishing
amateur television transmitters. During the past year, such experiments have
been carried out at the "I. V. Stalin" State Polytechnical Institute (Durzh-
avna Politekhnika), in which still scenes (from negatives and films) have been
transmitted by means of scanning with a moving beam.
In February 1952, the "Aleksandur Stepanovitch Popov" Television Collec-
tive (televizonnen kolektiv), located at 50 'Boris I" Street fin Sofia7, suc-
ceeded in transmitting animated scenes by strong artificial light. For the
last 2 weeks, good pictures of the surrounding landscape, including
details, have been obtained by natural light. Even the smoke from
the chimneys of nearby buildings can be clearly seen. Interior scenes are ob-
tained with illumination from an ordinary lamp.
The collective considers the preparation of the apparatus for amateur TV
transmission completed. With sufficient public support, there will be regu-
lar amateur television programs in the near future.
The "Aleksandur Stepanovitch Popov" Television Collective has four mem-
bers: Krum Grigorov, Tseko Tsekov, Khristo Purvanov, and Yosif Grigorov
(Krum Grigorov's brother). Several technicians and students have also con-
tributed their services.
Krum Grigorov, the technical manager of the collective, has worked in
the field of electronics since 1927; he began his first experiments with
television in 1932. These experiments consisted in receiving the Mosocw pro-
grams through a Nipkow disc by mechanical means.
The idea of amateur television transmission occurred to Krum Grigorov
after 1940, when Iconoscope tubes became available at a lower cost.

After 9 September 1944, he began to develop an original television system
which would make possible the introduction of amateur television and pulse
techniqueu in Bulgsrla. Realizing that be would need help, he formed the col-
lective, and thus development of the transmitter was hastened. Now the collec-
tive is receiving public support.
