~, ~ne following article on construction being done in the
Rhodope' mining basin is from the 12 April 1953 Lssue of Rabot-
nichesko Delo.
STAT
Bulgarian geologists under the supervision of Soviet specialists have
dis~:overed large deposits of Iron, lead and zinc, and copper ore in the
Rhodope Afountains. The formerly insignificant villages of Strashimir, lay-
kov Chuknr, Konski Dol, Madan,?Srednogortsi, Kr~;shov Dol, Borieva, Ribnitsa,
and Rudozem are being transformed into small minims towns. During 1952, the
"Sovbolatroy" (Soviet-Bulgarian Construction) Rnterprise built 33,000 square
meters of housing for workers, four cultural centers, two substations, and
two diesel plants in the Rhodope mining area, as well as a flotation instal-
lation in Rudozem. Rudozem is a ;nininri town with a population of 5,000.
There is an enriching ~oncentratie~ plant in Kurdzhali, which now has
over 22,000 inhabitants. Some day a lead and zinc plant will be built in the
Rhodope area.
A new cableway is being constructed betweeh Iaykov Chukar, Borie?{a,
Sharenska, and Rudozem.
This .year, "Sovbolstroy" w111 build almost 600 two-room apartments in
the Rhodope area. By 1 May 153, the machines in the Rudozem flotation in-
stallation w111 be in operation and .trucks will carry hundreds of tone of
concentrates from the installation.
