fUomment: The following is a a amary of an article which ap-
peared in the May 1953 Issue of the French Communist monthly period-
ical Regards devoted to "Hungary at the Threshold of Socialism."
On Szabadsaghegy (Liberty Mountain) near Budapest, a "Republic of Pioneers"
is being managed completely by children, with the exception of a few adult
supervisors who remain in the background. Among the establishments run by
youngsters are a laundry, printing office, motion-picture theatre, a library,
and a post office where the switchboard is operated by a girl not yet 12 years
old.
A 76-centimeter-gauge railroad runs on the grounds for about 20 kilometers. Ex-
cept for the actual operationend maintenance cf the locomotives, the trains are run
entirely by the youngsters. The Pioneers selected for this duty are 10 - 14
years old and must be among the top students in the Budapest schools. After
a training period, they serve on the railroad for 6 hours every 10 days. The
lost school day is made up for by good school work, since only continued high
grades assure further duty on the trains.
