According to statistical data, the total annual precipitation in Bulgaria
is 66 billion cubic meters of water, inclulin~~ 17 billion cubic meters of drain-
off water. According to inccmpletc data, 65 percent or 11 billion cubic meters
of xater could be used for irrigation. A^, the irrigation norm is 500 cubic
meters of water per decare, about !F5 percent of Bulgarian agricultural land
could therefore be irrigated. The putentinl power of Bulgarian mountain ?. rivers
is 2-2.5 million kilocratts. During 1952, a total of 2 million decares of land
was irrigated and the "Stalin" Drushlyan, the ililcopol-Svishtov-Byala, and large
portions of the Cherven Bryag and the Purvomay irrigation systems were completed.
This summer, the "Pirinsl^.a Bistritsa" irrigation system in the Blagoevgrad
Okrug, the Devnenski izvori (Devnya Springs) irrigation system in Stalin Okrug,
over 70 percent of the Sandrovo irrigation system, and 45 percent of the
Rosit.^.a irri~stion system will be in operation. 'Phe construction of the Sofia,
the Stara Zagora, and the :',nzanlul: irritation systems will begin this year,
The Shabla and Batovo irrigation ..^,ystem:; in ilobrudaha are now under construction.
In 1944, 357,000 decares ?aere irrigated; in 19!x7, 629,000; in 1950,
1,263,000; and in 1952, 2,004,000. The plan for 1953 calls for the irrigation
of 3,000,000 decares.

Bulgaria has built the "Stalin," the "VtiLl.o Chcrvenl:ov,"and the "Republikn" TETs,
which have a total output capar.ity of 95,000 ::ilowatt~ and provide electric
power to the most industrialized centers of the ri^.tion. In the next 2-3 years,
the "tfaritsa-Iztolc" TETs in Dimitrovgrad xill be built. 'i9iis TLi's will use coal
i~om the Last ilarit;;a bituminous coal basins.

By December 1952, 2,523 villages, comprising 7n. percent of Bulgaria's

:+eterway system, called the "Vasil Kolarev" Dnm-Batak-Uebrashtitsa .?]aritsa
waterway. 4later flowing from the "Vasil .iolarov` Jam to the 2?:aritsa ;liver
will supply four electric power stations; in the fro^e.^,:;~ it will descend
1,300 meters. Bach cubic meter of water florin; Sato the ;'aritsa River will
produce 2.70 kilowatt:, of power. The artificial lakcrwith a volume of
3DO million cubic meters, will make it possible to produce power at the time
when it is most needed.
