HAULING OPERATIONS OR USSR RAILWAYS
IMPORTANT FREIGHT STATIONS -- Moscow, Gudok, 21 Oct 53
The task now confronting the railroad workers is the continuous fulfillment
of the state hauling plan for all types of freight. Daily, the railroad systems
must work out operational measures, paying particular attention to the loading
points of important types of freight, including consumer goods. Of all the
freight hauled on USSR railroads, 17 stations handle 31 percent of all sugar,
21 stations handle 51 percent of all cloth, 16 stations handle 50 percent of
all cotton, and 5 stations handle 73 percent of all salt. A steady flow of
empties must be provided to these stations.
HAULING CONSUMED GOODS ON TRANSBAYKAL SYSTEM -- Moscow, Gudok, 24 Oct 53
The variety of goods hauled on the Transbaykal Railroad System is con-
stantly increasing. In the third quarter of 1953, the trade organizations of
Chitinskaya Oblast received for public sale 12 percent more silk fabrics, 54
percent more woolen fabrics, and 17 percent more sewn articles than in the
second quarter of 1953. In September alone, 20 million rubles' worth of manu-
factured goods and food products were loaded and sent to the agricultural re-
gions.
The hauling of consumer goods in October has increased and the monthly
plan for loading and dispatching has been completed ahead of schedule. On
23 October on the Transbaykal Railroad System, the following were loaded above
the plan: 78 cars of meat, 50 care of vegetables, and 83 cars of footwear,
clothing, bicycles, and other manufactured goods. Six million rubles' worth
of cement, slate, iron, and other construction materials were sent to the
agricultural regions for MT5 and kolkhozes.

CONSUMER GOODS ON BELORUSSIAN SYSTEM -- Moscow, Gudok, 25 Oct 53
During September and 20 days of October, 27,000 cars with various types
of food and manufactured products were loaded and sent from stations of the
Belorussian Railroad System. There were 120 cars of confectionery, 65 cars
of canned goods, and more than 150 cars of butter dispatched above the norm.
Striving for an increase in consumer goods hauled, station workers have
improved the technology of loading and classification work and have reduced
car layover time. The crew of the Minsk-Tovarnyy-Vostochnyy Station, in the
second 10-day period of October, reduced car layover time by .9 hours below
the norm.
QUICKER HANDLING, PRESERVATION OF CONSUMER GOODS -- Ashkhabad, Turkmenskaya
Iskra, 11 Dec 53
On the Ashkhabad Railroad System, there has been an increase in the flow
of consumer goods. The November flow, by comparison with September, has in-
creased 50 percent. For more rapid movement of freight, a number of technical
and organizational measures have been provided. In the freight office of the
administration of the Ashkhabad Railroad System, two groups have been created
to provide for the movement of food and manufactured products. For the hauling
of less-than-carload consignments,a department has been organized, an additional
number of local-distributing cars have been provided, and a special graph for
their operation has been set up. The number of inspectors has been increased
for a tighter control over the hauling of consumer goods.
The construction of a new container-handling area is being completed at
Nary Station, and Nebit-Dag Station has begun the equipping of a container-
handling point. In ehkhabad, final preparations are now being made for
the erection of a new ice plant for icing transit perishable freight. With
the operation of this ice station, it will no longer be necessary to transport
ice from Stalinabad.
NEW FREIGHT, BAGGAGE HALING METHOD ON BALTIC SYSTEM -- Tallin, Sovetskaya
Estoniya, 12 Dec 53
A new system for the reception of freight from organizations, kolkhozes,
kolkhoz workers, and the city population has been introduced on the Baltic
Railroad System. The necessary paper work for the reception of baggage has been
simplified and the requirements for hauling agricultural freight have been
changed. Under the new system, kolkhoz workers wishing to transport agricultural
products need only present a statement that they belong to an artel. This gives
them the right to transport produce `reigning up to 100 kilograms on local and
suburban trains.
The railroad tariffs for hauling agricultural freight in package consign-
ments have been reduced 15-25 percent. After selling their surplus produce,
kolkhoz workers who purchase furniture in the city stores may transport it by
railroad under the same conditions.
