The society participated in two large scientific sessions, organized jointly with the Geographtc Faculty of Leair. rad University and with the Leningrad Depe tment of the All-Union Scientific and technical Society of Mining ~Engineera). Also, in 195?, +tie ~~cic+y ,gold iy general conferences of society members, 3 meetings of the scientific councils, 44 meetings of the presidium, and 124 meetings of the committees, departments, and commissions, at which a total of 153 scientific reports were heard. A total of 191 lectures (146 by visiting lecturers) were given to a total audience of 23,000 persons in the Yu. M. Shokal'skiy lecture room. The society's phenological network was increased to 532 correspondentG. Two new organizations, the Commission on Heliogeophysics and the Library Council, were especially active. The Department of Economic Geography, with other departments and commissions, held a meeting to discuss the topic "Directives of the 19th Congress of the CPSU." The most active units in 1952 were the Cartographic, Soil, and Aerial Photog- raphy Commissions and the Departments of Economic Geography, Ethnography, Physical Geography, and History of Geographical Sciences. The Depar+,ments of Biogeography, the Phonological Commissions, the Commission for the Study of the History and Development of USSR Cities, and the Commission on Water Resources were 1E69 active. The Commission on Water and Forests did not function in 1952. General Conferences The first general conference uas devoted to the 125th anniversary of the birth of P. P. Semenov-Tyan-Shanskiy; the conference heard renort.s by S. V. Kalesnik ("Travels oP P. p. Semenov in tha Tyan Shan Mountains") and 0. A. Konstantinov ("P. Y. Semenov's Role in Economic Geography"). The second conference heard a report by A. F. Laktionov ("G. Ya. Sedov, Explorer"). The third heard Academician D. V. Nalivkln report on "Works of I. V. Mushketov." The fourth heard a report by Academician Ye. N. Pavlovskiy, the president of the Society, on the resolutions of the 19th Congress? of the CPS?T. Pavlcvskiy was electe3 president of the society, and I. P. Gerasimov, Corresponding Member, Academy of Sciences USSR, and Prof S. V. Kalesnik were elected vice-presidents. The third meeting selected the scientific secretary of the society and the editorial staff of the periodical Izvesti Vseso Obahchestva. Meetings of Presidium The presidium of the society met xeekly in 1952 (excert in July and August), for a total of 44 meetings, to direct the operations of the society. It also considered the following matters: petitions of local council and party organ- izations concerning confirmation of affiliates or departments ~f the society; plans for the publication of the works of the departments and cou~issions and ' of members of the society; participation of the society in ,joint sessions with other societies or organizations; prospective plans for ,:he operation of the ceatrel organization,'affiliates, and divisions (otdel) of the society; the accounts of operations turned in by the various presidents and scientific secretaries of the affiliates and divisions (e. g., of the Amur Affiliate, and Crimean'and Stalingrad Division;); reports i'ram active members of the society acquainted with the operations of various affiliates and divisicns of the society (e. g.., the Uzbek gffiliste, and the Kharkov, ;;rasnoyarsk, and East Siberian Divisions); reports on the operation of the Committee for the Dissem- ination of Geographic Knowledge, and other units of the centx?al organization.
