CHINESE INDUSTRIES INCREASE PRODUCTION EXPAND FACILITIES
IN LATE 1953 AND EARLY 195
[Summary: Several hundred factories and mines in China com-
pleted their 1953 quotas ahead of schedule. In Northeast China,
185 state and local state-operated industries fulfilled their 1953
production quotas by 15 December 1953. In early January 1953, the
Electric Furnace Steel Refining Section of the T'ai-yuan Ironworks
in Shansi decreased smelting times and increased production. For
the period of 1 through 10 January 1954, factories and mines in
Peiping and other areas of China exceeded their production quotas.
Southwest industries are planning to increase their 1954 production.
The Tientsin Steelworks exceeded or met productions quotas for the
first few days of January 1954.
The Ta-yeh Steelworks is expc,~tin-, to complete the first stage
of its expansion work in 1955. The Seamless Steel Tubing Plant of
the An-shan Iron and Steel Company recently installed additional
heavy equipment. The Harbin Cement Factory plans to start its
expansion work in April 1954. Many new construction projects will
be undertaken in Southwest China during 1954.1

The Hsiang-t'an Electrical Equipment Factory in Hunan exceeded its 1952
production by 98 percent in 1953. The electric machine shop of this factory
raised the average monthly production figure per person from 1.06 motors in
1952 to 3.68 motors in 1953.

T'AI-yUAN IRONWORKS SMELTING TIMES AND PRODUCTION DATA -- Hong Kong, Ta Kung Pao,

In early January 1954, the Electric Furnance Steel Refining Section of the
T'ai-yuaa Ironworks in Shansi reduced the smelting time of its furnaces and in-
creased the output as follows:
Smelting 1 Jan 1954
Furnace No 1: First charge was completed in 4 hours 53 minutes, which was
1 hour 15 minutes less than 1953 average; second charge, in 4 hours 44 minutes.
Furnace No 2: First charge was completed in 5 hours 25 minutes, which was
1 hour 5 minutes less than the 1953 average; second charge, in 5 hours 19 minutes,
and third charge, in 5 hours 17 minutes.
Smelting; 2 Jan 1954
Furnace No 1: Charge completed in 4 hours 42 minutes as compared to the
previous day's 4 hours 44 minutes.
Furnace No 2: Charge completed in 5 hours 15 minutes as compared to the
previous day's 5 hours 17 minutes.
Production Data
The quota set for 1 January 1954 was exceeded by 40 percent which was one
percent more than the previous high.
The production of 4 January 1954 exceeded the highest previous daily pro-
duction achieved during the 1953 fourth quarter by 1.06 percent.

1954 PRODUCTION INCREASE IN SOUTHWEST -- Hong Kong, Ta Kung Pao, 21 Feb 54
Industries in the Southwest are expecting to increase their 1954 production
as follows: Over-all increase -- 24.6 percent over the 1953 production; local
state-operated and public-private jointly operated industries -- more than 34
percent over the 1953 porduction.
TIENTSIN STEELWORKS MEET PRODUCTION QUOTAS -- Hong Kong, Ta Kung Pao, 15 Jan 54
During 1-4 January 1954, the sections and branches of the Tientsin Steel-
works exceeded or met production quotas as follows:
The steel Refining Section exceeded its quota in the production of steel
ingots.
Branch Plants No 2 and 4, and the Wire Section met their production quotas.
EXPANSION WORK OF TA-YEH STEELWORKS -- Peiping, Jen-min Jih-pao, 16 Jan 54
Data on the expansion wcrk and the training program of the Ta-yeh Steel-
works formerly under the KMT Hrn-yeh-p'ing but now under the Hua-chuuig (Central
Chinaj Steel and Iron Company, are as follows:
Expansion Work
Aim: To develop Ta-yeh into second largest steel center of China, next
to An-span.
Plan: Initial planning work completed a ycar ago; expansion work to be
undertaken in two stages, the first to be completed in 1955.
Starting Date: Early spring months of 1954.
Expansion Work During First Stage: Installation of an open-hearth furnace
for smelting steel, an electric furnace, a rolling shop, a forging shop, a shop
for installing large-scale pneumatic hammer, a hydraulic press, and coal, steam,
and electric motors.

Organizations to be Established: A smelting, rolling, machinery and electric
equipment installation, metalworks drainage and road construction, and civil
construction com-+asies as well as six shops. The shops include: mechanized
eequipentt supply, lumber processing, cement crushing, machinery installation,
aick shops. They will assemble and train technicians, management cadres,
and basic construction personnel in the fulfillment of expansion work.

The Seamless Steel Tubing Plant of the An-span Iron and Steel Company,
which is supplying seamless tubes to the manufacturers of trains, steamships,
and tractors, installed the following heavy aquipment: ~-,OOO_ton shearing

HARBIN CEMENT FACTORY EXPANDS -- Hong Kong, Ta K-9 Pao, 25 Feb 54
Data on the scheduled expansion of the state-operated Harbin Cement Factory
include the following:
Starting date: April 1954
Scheduled completion date: April 1955
Expected production increase after completion: 80 percent of output pre-expansion
New installations: Rotary kiln, raw [material] grinder, raw storage,'dor-
mitories, and day nursery
