Pew Hospitals for hirers
The new hospital for miners in Erlabrunn, near Schwarzenberg, Sachsen,
can accommodate up to 1,200 patients.(1) At the "Karl Marx" Coal Mines, a
new hospital is to be built, for which 261,000 Deutsche marks were allocated
by the government. Of this sum, 26,000 Deutsche marks are allocated for
medical equipment.(2)
Zabelitz Rural Hospital
One of the largest rural hospitals in the GDR is located st Zabelitz,
Sachsen. This hospital is housed in an old castle, is equipped to handle
maternity cases and dental work, and has X-ray facilities, therapeutic baths,
radiation-treatment facilities, and therapeutic-massage facilities,~3)
Hospital for Chronic Diseases
The Ludwig Hoffman Hospital for Chronic Diseases is located in Berlin-
Buch. Its director is Dr Georges [fnu]. One of the chief services of the
hospital is the treatment of rheumatic diseases. One special building of the
hospital is devoted entirely to physical therapy. A Swiec "Syncardon" for the
treatment of disturbances in the peripheral circulation of the blood is consid-
ered one of the hospital's prized posseasions.(4)

New Hospital in Hennigsdorf
The most modern hospital in the GDR is soon to be completed in Hennigsdorf.
The cost of the hospital is 15 million Deutsche marks. The hospital will have
accommodations for 300 male patients and 240 female patients. In addition,
there will be hospital accommodations for infants, a 14-room pharmacy, several
laboratories, five amphitheaters, septic and aseptic operating roams, bathing
200tallations, a polyclinic, an isolation ward, and an auditorium seating

National-Prize-Winnin Ph sicians
Professor Dr Heller [fnu], a surgeon and one of the recipients of the 1953
National Prize, is a member of the German Academy of Science aad professor
emeritus at the University of Leipzig. Dr He11er's specialities are surgery of
the abdominal organs, the points, and the brain. He introduced a method for
removing foreign metallic particles from the brain with a giant magnet. Among
his published works is a text on the technique of operations for esophagospasm.
At present, he is also active as consulting surgeon at the new Erlabrunn Hospi-
tal for Miners.
Professor Dr Albrecht Peiper, another recipient of the National Prize, is
the director of the children's clinic at the University of Leipzig. He is
credited with making possible the lowering of the infant death rate in the GDR
by 27 percent during the last 3 years. Professor Peiper was born in Greifswald
in 7.889 and studied medicine at the university in his home town. At present,
his two primary concerns are the determination of factors causing deaths of
premature babies and measures for assuring the purity of milk fed to babiea.(6)
