THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION BALL BEARING MAI7UFACTURING IN CHINA Chang Yu-show E gineer, P_an.rfng Offir~ Automobile Industry Bureau The foundation of new China's ball bearing manufactrsing Lnduntry consisted of some old and broken-down factories left by the old China. Tne Japanese imperi- alists had established a ball bearing manufacturing plant Sn the Northeast during 193B, because raw material and cheap lnbor were easily available there. However, the plant could process only the irurer and outer rings and the fittings of axle bearings. The balls were imported. Wien Lhe KMT controlled tare Northeast, the ball bearing plant wasseriously lamaged and stopped i:roducing. Production in the bail bearing manufacturing plant was resumed later when the plant was in the hands of the Chinese people. Ir the spring of 19k9, when the imported balls stored in the warehuuse were practically used gyp, production was almost supped. The leaders and the workers were very anxious. Tlrey knew that if no balls were Unoorted there would be no production, and tha operation of many plants and mines would be affected. This serious problem was presented to the Northeast Department of Industry. Tire Department of Industry asked the ball bearing manufacturing plants t; experiment in the manufacturing of balls with some old grinding machines. The ir~nortant part; of the grinding machines were missing. The plant ad- ministrators gave the assignment of repairing the machines to Sung Slrih-f'a. Several old workers and ten .,r more apprentices were assigned to work with him. Ctrirr Te-y?an, the shop leader, was supervisor. After two months, parts were added to the machines and they could be operated but the grinding wheels were not perfect. Sung Shih-fa read many reference books and asked questions of tech- ntcians, but he could not find the answer. But difficulty did not make Sung give up. Sung rai::ad the question to Chin Te-;,uan, uggested cast iron mates for tha gri:rding? After r,:adiug reference boo'r.:. and improving the machinery parts, the staudur^ bell bearin~?:;~.+erc pr:;duced. Using 1949 as the base year, the production for ;95c; was j00 percent, for 197 was 560 percent, and for ly5j it was estimated at ._,~;G .,-rent. kt present, over 1,000 types of bearing products are pr~duceu. Ti,e complete c:et .f axle bearings from the inner diamatar of millimeters to the outer diameter oi' 500 or 600 millimeters were Hanel'&ctured wiacii attained i:rternat}onal stand- ards. For the next 5 years, with the aid of the Soviet Ur.-:on, production ;f ba1'_ bearings in China will exceed the former nrocuction records and will be fire best in quality and quantity.
