PROGRESS SHORTCOMINGS AT USSR HEAVY MACHINE BUILDING PLANTS
NEW PRODUCTS, LOWER COSTS -- Leningradskaya Pravda, 24 Nov 53
Since the beginning of 1953, the Leningrad Pnevmatika Plant has established
production of six new types of machines and apparatus. Among these are new-
model hammer drills, pick hammers, and pneumatic motors.
In the postwar years, the plant has produced more than 100,000 pick ham-
mete:. More of these are now Prcduced daily than in all of April 1946.
Suggestions of innovators adopted this year are effecting an economy of
about one million rubles. The lowering of production costs on hammer drills
and pick hammers accounts for 200,000 rubies of this total.
PLANT RAISES PRODUCTIVITY -- Ri;a, Sovetskaya Latviya, 4 Jul 53
In recent years the Riga Kompressor Plant has been completely rebuilt and
many new techniques have been mastered by its workers. As a result, in 1953
production will be almost 2 1/2 times that of 1951, and the output of individ-
ual workers, 1 1/2 times that of 1951.
In the past 3 years, expenditure of materials has been reduced by 2 1/2
times, and labor cost for operating each machine has decreased by almost four
times, though workers' wages have risen.
RAISE OUTPUT SIXFOLD SINCE WAR -- Yerevan, Kommunist, 27 Sep 53
In recent years, the Stalinabad Machinery Plant imeni Ordzhonikidze has
established production of more than 50 new items. Plant output is six times as
as Rreat as in the prewar period, and both production costs and labor consump-
tion have been cut to one third the prewar level.

above-plan profits amounting to over 2 million rubles.
FAIL TO FULFILL PLANS -- Petrozavodsk, Leninskoye 'a, 18 Oct 53
The Petrozavodsk Onega Plant is working poorly this year. Month after
month, plans for current winch production and for the establishment of new pro-
duction remain unfulfilled. Labor productivity is low; loss from rejects is
high. Stocks of acid and semifinished materials are accumulating. The poor
financial condition of the plant indicates that the plant management is ne-
glecting ftt task of lowering production costs.
FAIL TO LOWER PRODUCTION COSTS -- Leningradskaya Pravda, 3 Oct 53
The ;.'ningrad Hoist and Transport Equipment Plant imeni Kirov is not cop-
ing with its task of lowering production costs. The produclivlty of labor is
low; many workers do not fulfill their mss.
The plant suffers a monthly loss of about 300.000 rubles, while the plant
management calmly accepts the situation, does not mechanize labor-consuming
operations, and is not concerned with raising the qualifications of workers.
