Designer, "Krasnogvardeyets",
Plant, Leningrad
To determine the effectiveness of measures carried out for the bacterio-
logical purification of the air, a special apparatus must be used. An appa-
ratus of th13 type helps in the investigation of various means for disinfecting
the air. Such an apparatus was designed at the "Krasnogvardeyets" medical-
instruments plant, in collaboration with the Chair of General Hygiene, first
Leningrad Medical Institute imeni I. P. Pavlov.
The apparatus consists of two assemblies The main assembly is a cylinder,
by means of which air samples are taken. Inside the cylinder is a small
electric motor with an air pump. Above the air pump is a small table on which
is placed a standard Petri dish filled with a nutrient medium. The top of the
cylinder is closed by a cover which has a narrow slit. When the motor is
switched on, the air is sucked in through this slit, impinges with force on
the surface of the nutrient medium, where it leaves all microorganisms, and is
exhausted from the apparatus through a special opening. The second assembly
consists of a control panel and a mocromanometer. The micromanometer indicates
the quantity of air which has passed through the cylinder.
The mot r is connected to a network which has a potential of 127 v or
220 v. It ha n appliance which prevents interference with radio reception.
Extensive clinical testave demonstrated that the new design has merit.
Continuous production of the new apparatus has been started at the
"Krasnogvardeyets" plant.
