[domment: This report gives six tables from an article entitled, "Nanking
Branch of'tbe CMSNC (China Merchants Steam Navigation Company) Carries Out
Maximum Usage of Shipping Capacity," by Hsu Yu-,den, published in the Jen-min
Chian-t'ung (People's Communications), 15 October 1950. The tables show the
fuel consumption of ships; the load gppacity&chedules, and speed of small
steamers; commodities used by steamers in July and August 7.950; and oil consump-
tion on ships of the Nanking Branch of the CMSNC.
The unit of measure for fixed rate of consumption of coal and oil given
in Table 3 is kilograms per hour; this makes the figures in certain categories,
such as grease consumption, seem high.]

The fixed rates of coal and oil are determined by the actual consumptio.: for
April and May, but the fixed rate of tallow oil is calculates by adding the
planned and actual consumption and dividing by two.
Since harbor work consumption of coal exceeds navigation consumption of coal
by 30 kilograms, the harbor work consumption of coil is calculated as 250
kilograms. Others are calculated according to actual consumption.
The fixed rates are determined according to actual consumption. But the fixed
rite of drinking water is increased by 200 kilograms per ton.
After the closing of books, this ship has an inventory of 10 tons of coal. It
is calculated that 9 kilograms of coal shou-'d be deducted from consumption.
Therefore, 5 kilograms are deducted from navigation, 4 kilograms from anchor-
age, 16 kilograms from drinking water. For oil consumption, 20 kilograms are
deducted from cylinder oil, 20 kilograms from mobile oil, 16 kilograms from
grease.
The fixed rates are determined according to actual consumption. But the fixed
rate of drinking water is calculated as 80 kilograms in accordance with the
number of personnel on ship.

The navigation adjustment is calculated according to harbor work and navigation
time. Ten kilograms are deducted from harbor work, and 2 kilograms are de-

actual consumption.
The fixe'. rates are determined according to actual consumption. The fixed rate
of drinking water is calculated as 100 kilograms in accordance with the number
of personnel on ship.

This ship has an excess of 20 tons of coal. Therefore, coal consumption for
navigation is calculated as 230 kilograms; harbor work, 220 kilograms.
Others are calculated according to actual consumption.
The fixed rates are determined according to actual consumption. The fixed
rate of tallow oil is calculated in accordance with the planned number.
Hsiang-p'ing works at Chia-mu-ssu and therefore the fixed rates are deter-
mined according to actual consumption, but 10 kilograms are deducted from
harbor work, and one kilogram is added to navigation.
Kung-jen Hao works at Chia-mu-ssu and therefore the fixed rates are deter-
mined according to actual consumption.
Chieh-fang works at Chia-mu-ssu and therefore the fixed rates are determined
according to actual consumption.
The fixed rates are determined according to actual consumption.
Coal consumption for navigation it calculated according tc actual consumption
of this year; harbor work, according co fixed rates; temporary anchorage,
according to fixed rates; anchorage, according to actual consumption; oil,
according to actual consumption.
