USSR PHYSICIANS HOLD CONFERENCE
Oil PROPFIYLAXZS OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES
A conference of oblast physicians was held at Ryazan' where scientific
and practical questions were discussed. This conference was organized by the
Moe' ,w Institute of Vaccines and Sera imeni Mechnikov, the Ryazan' Medical
Institute imeni I. P. Pavlov, and the local public health department. Physicians
of the sanitary-epidemiological stations of the Moscow, Kaluga, Yaroslavl', and
Smolensk oblasts took part in the work of the conference.
The purpose of the conference t!ns to render aid to practicing physicians
as a way of improving ',;'e medical service given to the rural population and the
organization of sanitary-antiepidemic measures at machine-tractor stations,
sovkhozes, and kolkhozes. The physicians were acquainted with the achievements
of Soviet science in the prophylaxis, diagnosis, and therapy of influenza, dys-
entery, leptospiroses, and epidemic hepatitis.
Workers from the Moscow Institute of Vaccines and Sera imeni Mechni::ov'
informed the participant- at the meeting on the latest progress made in work
on methods for the prophylaxis of a number of infectious diseases. Prof Var-
folomeyeva discussed in her report problems pertaining to the existence of
natural reservoirs of leptospiroses, the development of such reservoirs, and
measures to be taken for their elimination. The problems discussed by Var-
folomeyeva are of great importance for rural regions.
Zverev, Golubeva, and Bakayeva told about the new therapeutic agents
Coliantiphagin (Bernhof's preparation) and Preparations No 16, which are at
present being used successfully for the treatment of dysentery and other diseases.

Interesting reports dealing iiith influen::a, Botkin's disease [epidemic
hepatitis], diphtheria, and dysentery were presented by the practical physicians
Ivatunina, I1'inova (Ryazan'), and Yevrumov (Kaluga). Reports were also presented
by workers from the Ryazan' Medical Institute: Prof Sergeyev, Timchenko, Saraykina,
Porubinovskaya, and others.
