USSR ROCKET DEVELOPMENT
(This report gives in full an article published in the above-named
Sxias periodical.]
USSR rocket development, xhich is given much attention, is based on German
models that fell into the hands of the Russians at the end of World War II.
Rather large installations are said to be located at Khapsalu, Eathonia. The
following types are known:
1. A multipurpose missile (without type designation) xhich can be employed
against both ground and air targets. It has n thrust of about 8,000 kilograms
and a range of 55-65 kilometers. This missile is not guided in flight by remote
control.
2. The C2 (an improved German "Wasserfall" type) has a thrust of about
8,000 kilograms and a range of about 1,000 (sic] kilomotera. The firing ramp
is said to be transportable over the most difficult terrain.
3. The Hs 117 (originally a German type Henschel Hs 117 "Schmetterliag")
looks like an aircraft. It is launched from the ground and is designed chiefly
for use against bomber formations. The maximum altitude of this rocket is
said to be 15 kilometers, and the maximum horizontal range 32 kilometers at a
speed of 1100 kilometers per hour. The possibility exists that a variation of
this type can be used as a guided missile launched from an aircraft.
4. A delta-wing rocket which is launched from ramps and xhich resembles
the Convair XF y2 A, and the flying bomb Novaya Katyusha, have also been devel-
oped. -- Reported by WM
