SINGAPORE STOPS CHINA-DESTINED MACHINE PARTS;
THAILAND. BANS IMPORTS OF PARTS FROM BORDER COUNTRIES
Singapore customs authorities intercepted 46 cases of merchandise, worth
400,000 Straits dollars, which were being smuggled to Hong Kong on the Meng-
ai-wang Lhinese approximation of foreign name of vessel7 for transshipment to
Communist China. The merchandise consisted of items urgently needed in Com-
munist China such as spark plugs, automobile brakes, electrical appliances,
and other machine parts.
Meanwhile, Thai police are investigating a report that hundreds of cars
were smuggled into Thailand during the past few months. To prevent business-
men from evading automobile import restrictions by importing automobiles la-
beled as automobile parts, the Thai government has barred the import of auto-
mobile parts from Burma and Indochina. This resulted in the freezing of 3 mil-
lion baht's worth of the commodities along the Thai-Burma border. It is re-
ported that some bu::inessmen in Thailand hope to go to Singapore to buy automo-
bile parts and have already petitioned the British consul for visas.
