PURGE IN STORE FOR GREEK COMMUNIST PARTY LEADER
Information coming from various sources confirms a report mentioned a
few days ago that the KKE (Greek Communist Party) leadership located behind
the Iron Curtain will also feel the recent new wave of purges which Moscow
has unleashed against the leadership of her Satellites.
It seems that the successor of Nikos Zahariadis, the KKE leadLr, will
be Roussos. At the same time, the reappearance of Miltiadis Porfyrogenis,
who wa., missing for a long time, strengthens the impression that purges are
in store for the clique around Zahariadis.
The realization of the above by the Cominform can mean, at least as
far as Greece is concerned, a change in the Jommunist7 tactics being followed
to penetrate the masses. It is maintained that it is possible that Moscow
is seeking to place certain persons at the head of the KKE Klimakion fection7
in Greece so that their cooperation with the "progressive" elements of other
Greek parties might be facilitated.
Observers in Greece do not expect -- at least for the moment -- any move
on an international scale by the Communists to reorganize the so-called"peo-
ple's fronts." At any rate, an attempt by the Communists to try to re-establish
such a front in Greece is not our_ of the question. It is believed that any
possible purge of Zahariadis and his colleagues will mean a change in the KKE
policy being followed in Greece.
