NEW PIANT RESEA2CH INSTITUTE IN HUNGARY Decree No 23/1954 (111.27) of the Council of Ministers states that an in- stitute, to be known as the National Institute for Plant Species Experimenta- tion (Orszagos Novenyfaitakiserleti Intezet), is to be established in Budapest. The institute is to conduct experiments with and evaluate plant species, perform research on species, and take care of the administrative affairs of the Council for the Classification of Plant Species (Novenyfajtaminosito Ta- nacs). The institute will be created from the Department of Plant Species Ex- perimentation of the Horticultural Research Institute (Kerteszeti Kutato In- tezet) and will include the 31 experimental stations of the latter insititute. Additional stations for experimentation with plant species will be set up in Zala and Nograd megyek and in the vicinity of Szerencs. The gardens of the institute will include sections for fruits, grapes, herbs, and decorative plants. The institute will be under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Agricul- ture, and its research and experimental work will be supervised by the Council for the Classification of Plant Species. Institute salaries and supplies must be provided for in the budget of the Ministry of Agriculture. Certain provisions of Decree No 83/1951 (IV. 8) of the Council of Minis- ters on the classification of improved plant species are modified as follows: The council will decide all questions pertaining to the classification of plant species. It will determine which species are to be introduced to or withdrawn from national cultivation; it will advise the Minister of Agricul- ture as to the proper locality for growing classified plants and as to the awards to be given to persons responsible for improving plants. The head of the council and the members will be appointed by the Minister of Agriculture for a 3-year period. The following persons are members of the council by virtue of their position: the leaders and chief' agronomists of the Directorate of Plant Cul- tivation of the Ministry of Agriculture, the chief agronomists of the agri- cultural branch of the megye councils, and the director of the National In- stitute for Plant Species Experimentation. Members by appointment will consist of two representatives each from the Ministry of Light Industry, the Ministry of Foreign and Domestic Trade, the Ministry of Food Industry, the National Planning Office, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the University of Agriculture; and one representa- tive each from pertinent agricultural and industrial research institutes, as well as experts called in by the Minister of Agriculture. Persons who improve an exceptional and widely cultivated plant may re- ceive an award of up to 50,000 forints if the species is recognized and up to 100,000 forints, if it is registered. The size of the award will depend on the importance and quality of the new plant species. These persons will receive additional remuneration in proportion to the propagation of the plant.
