The dates for the often-postponed Congreso Continental de Cultura, slated to be held in Santiago, have now been set for 26 April 1953 through 2 May 1953, with little likelihood of any further postponement. Pablo NERUDA, Chilean Communist poet, recently returned from Vienna, Moscow, and a two-week rest near Montevideo, has been relieved of all organizational tasks connected with the Cultural Congress. NERUDAts name will continue to be played up in oonneotion with the Congress for prestige purposes9.but as a result of irresponsibility and lack of initiative shown to date, he is being replaced by Cesar GODOY Urrutia as the responsible PCCh organizer, GODOY, a well-known Chilean Communist leader generally considered to be the Party's n=ber-one organizer, took charge of preparations about the end of January. GODOY will not appear officially as an organizational leader, but will direct all organizational activities and propa- ganda. 2. Activities with respect to preparations for the Congress had been virtually dormant during NERUDAts absence and immediately prior to the designation of GODOY as organizational director. Enrique BELLO Cruz, Communist writer and director of the Communist-line magazine Pro-Arts, will continue as nominal organizational director and will serve as GODOYts chief aide. Others who will play leading roles in future organizational activities are Alberto ROMERO, a writer, who is president of the Comite de Iniciativas, and Selva SAAVEDRA, a Doctrinary Radical and Director of the Escuela Tecnica No. 1 of Santiago. 3. The selection of a Secretariat headquarters and a finance drive among Chilean intellectual groups are among the first and most immediate tasks contemplated by GODOY. With respect to the finances of the Congress, prior to NERUDAts return it was believed that he would receive certain supplementary funds while in Europa. However, there has been no further word regarding such funds since NERUDAts return.
