An unidentified military unit is quartered in the barracks previously occupied
by a combat engineers unit., located immediately southwest of Plovdiv., on the
Perushtitsa-.Brestovitsa road., adjacent to the barracks of the former 3 Cavalry
Regiment.

years behind the railroad station., in.the southeastern part of Plovdiv, in the

7. The city of Plovdiv rises on five hills, two of which have been declared military
zones and are forbidden to civilians. These two hills are the Bunardzhik and
Sakhat hills, at the foot of which are civilian houses; however, there are no
homes located in the upper portion of the hills. This area has been surround25X1
with barbed wire fences with signs stating that those crossing said fences will
be shot without warning. Durin World War II antiaircraft emplacements were
located on to of these hills.
On unardzhik ill, here is a woo en
ower meters in height., the use of which is not known. Underneath the two
hills, during World War II, air raid shelters were excavated, but they are now
closed or are used as storerooms for various purposes, and are rented to civilians.
Under Nebe Hill, a tunnel has been excavated to facilitate, it is said, the city
traffic. The excavation of the tunnel was concluded in June 19529 and work 25Xte
walls of the tunnel is now in progress.
8. A military hospital is located in the hospital zone of Plovdiv, on the hill
formerly known as Gendem Hill and now called Halmna Mladeshta Hill, in front of
Bunardzhik Hill.
9. In September and October 1951, fifteen to twenty reserve officers who were residents
of Plovdiv, were recalled for a two to three month period. These recalls are for
the purposes of training reserves in the use of new weapons of an unspecified type
which have been issued to the Bulgarian Army.
