In accordance with the instructions of the District National Committee in Lovosice (N51/FLr3),?issued at the beginning of October 1952, a recruiting campaign for the Home Guard (Domobrana) has been started in the district. Meetings are being held in all localities and all citizens who are not in any reserve organization are urged to join. Young people under military age, women, and old people are also being accepted. In some localities the basic military traininng'of recruits has already started,"but so far no arms have been-issued to the recruits. The response of the population to this recruiting campaign is very poor. 2. During September and October, units of the Workers Militia have been carrying out a number of field exercises in the district. The exercises were led by reserve officers and NCOs from the particular factories. Courses in various military subjects are also being held in factories for the members of the militia. 3. Women members of various societies, such as Sokol, the League of Friends of the USSR, the Women's League, etc., are being urged to join local fire-fighting units. Those who volunteer are immediately put through training courses with fire- fighting equipment and have to pass efficiency tests. lt.... All qualified nurses have been ordered by the military authorities to attend medical examinations for service with the'armed forces. After passing the exam- ination and interviews (similar to those for the issue of Vojenska Knizka.), they are issued Vojenska Knizka which are identical to the ones given to other.per- sonnel in the army reserve. They are also given NCO ranks according to their past experience and political reliability. SECRET/CONTROL - U. S.
