3. Rail traffic increased in the Dzhulfa area over last week. However,
it has not reached the standard shown during the. preceding two weeks.
The increase therefore is not extraordinary.

The following is a summary of Soviet activity along the Iranian border
for the period 20-26 February 1952.
Pol Daeht
1. The number of trains and loaded care has increased during this weekly
period. The number of night trains has doubled, but the types of loads
have remained the same for -day and night trains. In view of the fact
that no empty trains were cberved during day trafficlit is possible
that the empty cars were returned at night.
2. Following is a tabulation of' cars for the areas

Sia Rud
5. Traffic in the Sia Rud area has increased but has not reached the
volume shown for-the week ending 12 February. The types of loads
have not changed, consisting mostly of lumber, coal, and trucks,
The number of night trains has not changed. Tank cars going east
have increased in number it is not known if the tank cars are full.

7. Little activity was observed in the Khuda Afarin area, The number
of trains decreased. A large number of empty cars passed through
this area, There was a total of 695 empty cars, 404 of which moved
eastward, A comparison of this number with the 190 cars eastbound
from Sia Rud indicates that there may be an important
railroad yard between Xhuda Afarin and Sia Rud or side track cu

Tank Cars
10. There have been no conspicuous changes in tank car traffic during
this week. The number of cars has increased from 507 to 514, with
the most notable increase in the Pol Dasht-area -- from 143 to 213.
Activities of Border Units and Garrisons
11. The Dzhulfa area was the center of border unit activities and maneu-
vers; The extent of these activities was limited compared with last
week,, but several 105 mm guns were involved. Last week 543 soldiers
and officers participated in the maneuvers, whereas their number
dropped to 235 this week.
Road Traffic
12. Vehicles moving to and from Ordubad by road were as followst
Trucks - 315
Automobiles - 34
Jeeps - 31
Motorcycles - 12
The number of vehicles increased in this area, but the number of
soldiers transported dropped from 850 last week to 750 this week.
