In 1938, it was taken over by. the Bulgarian Sugar Cooperative and operated under its direction until 1944. At present, the number of persons working in this factory has been increased by three or four times over the pre-Communist regime fiLrare, approximately 2,000 for the harvest season, while the output has greatly diminished. 2. The sugar is eartracted from beets which are cultivated in the regions of Silistra, Taxtraki u, Sv ,, htcrr, Nikopcl, Oryakhovo, Somovit, Lom, and Vidin. At, first these regions produced between 70,000 and 80,000 tons of beets, while they now produce only .! ,Ooo to SO,Ot'+0 tons, the harvests yielded 23,000 to 28,000 tons of sugar in the pat,, but now yl.e1d on .r 15,000 to 17,000 tons. This decline in produativ- ity is a rrasult of the failure of the kolkhoz system which has been adopted through- out Bulgaria. Its chief is Tsanlso Kovache 25X1 15. After the sugar has been extracted from the sugar-beets,, the remainder is sold to alcohol factories. There are five large storage spaces of 500 tons each in the molasses section; these facilities were used for gasoline storage during World War II. i6. There is a total of eight large sugar-beet warehouses which are connected with the factory by a large avenue. These are approximately 1,500 meters. distant from the factory by direct line. 17. There are two very large sugar warehouses,, each capable of holding 1,000 carloads of sugar. 18. An electric cable line is used to transport the sugar-beets from the river docks, which are one and one-half kilometers from the factory. The landing docks have two large 5-ton cranes which are used to load the beets on the cable cars. A X7`0- horsept ;er bor is used to power the cable' line. Discipline at the factory is very severe and workers are transferred immediately after becoming esuspect.9n Discipline is constantly more severe in the hopes of increasing the productivity of the workers. 21. Other sugar factories, all subordinate to the Durzhavna Zakhari Fabriki (State Sugar Factories) with headquarters at Sofia, are located at Gorna Oryakhovitsa, Movdiv, and Pleven (Dolna Mitropoliya).
