An infantry unit of about two companies (consisting of soldiers who wore red epaulets with No 377) was seen leaving the city northward for field exer- cises in April 1949. On another day, a tank unit with 25 to 30 tanks, in- cluding about ten T-34s, was observed at the same place. AAA battery. AA gun emplacement. Northern exit of the city, on the sea shore, north of the oil harbor., and near a stadium. The southern sec- tor of the city, on a prominent hill, about 800 meters southwest of the main rail- road station. S)ST Six AA guns of about 80 mm and four guns of about 20 am were emplaced in well- camouflaged positions. The positions were permanently occupied., and the gun crews were quartered in wooden sheds north of the em- placements. Approved For Release 2001108RP4EA=RDP80-00810A000500290002-3 Ammunition depot con- sisting of a horseshoe- shaped, three-story building, about 100 meters long. Branch depot consisting of two, semi-underground, brick buildings, eight meters wide was con- structed in early 1949, and was surrounded by a barbed-wire fence. -4- In the western sector of the city. Referred to as Depot (Sklad) 25 and oper- ated by about ten MVD officers, 30 soldiers, and 30 Soviet laborers. The depot contained stocks of AT artillery and infantry ammunition, hand- grenades, mines, rifles, pistols, and light and heavy machine guns. Incoming shipments arrived from the freight yard by truck. On the foot of Zhukov Hill, west of the freight yard, about 100 meters north of the railroad line to Nikolayev and about 500 meters northeast of a transmitting station. The entire stock of mines from Skiad 25 was shifted to the branch depot at the end of February 1949. Rifle ammunition was stored in the smaller of the two de- pot buildings.
