Prior to February 1952, a Polish tank unit and a motoretrc1e rnit were quartered in the former Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalt east of the railroad station in Stuhm (Q 5h/D 77). Source observed 12 to 15 T-34/76 tanks and once saw 30 to 40 ZIS R-71 motorcycles of 500 cam piston displacement leaving the installation. The units were also equipped with ZIS 151 !-ton trucks and G;AZ type cross- country motor vehicles with four-wheel drive. Driving exercises were often performed with motorcycles and cross-country motor vehicles in the area yorth ~k the installation,,-where tanks were also seen training from time to time. 2. Source observed the tank unit in the former Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalt prior to early May 19520 He kne-,, that in the fall of 1951,g this unit had been transferred to Stuhm by rail. Residents of the town called the unit a tank battalion. Source, who believed that the barracks installation was occupied .by 500 to 600 men, observed about 25 T--34/76 tanks9 an unidentified b, of vehicle armored reconnaissance m orcycles, trucks and sedarnsn 25X1 Most of the soldi rs quartered in the former ac oo wore ue-grey orms an service caps with, .lack band. Other soldiers had khaki uniforms.] During the first six months of 19519 40 to 50 trucks and sedans were monthly repaired or overhauled in the motor vehicle repair shop which was attached to the. prison and was under the direction of a civilian manager. The vehicles repaired in this shop included a large number of KBW vehicles which arrived by road or by rail and some even from Warsaw and Krakow (Q 51/Z 24). The shop was adjacent to the north. and northeast sides of the prison which was located on the northeastern edge of the town between the roads toward Brazens- walde (Q 54/D 68) and. Deutsch,-Danerau (Q 54/D 78).2- 5. Prior to March 1952, a KBW guard unit of company strength was quartered in the former officials' house of the prison administration at the ts of approach road to the prison. This unit which,accord ng to statements was coldiers,waa subordinate to a Danzig (Q 55/I 42) rd frequently relieved. In March 1952, the KBW soldiers, who almost exclusively belonged to the 1930 class, had already served for 2 years. The soldiers stated that they bad still to serve 3 months and that recruits of the 1931 class had been drafted into their battalion in the fall of 1951 and in March 195203 64 Prior to May 1952, another source saw seven tanks covered with tarpaulins in the military installation east of the railroad station. He believed that they were T-3.4 tanks of an old typo. He also observed about 20 motorcycles as well as trucks and sedans near the installation. He had 25X1 learned that the headquarters to which the Stuhm unit was su r na a was 8 ationed in Danzig-Langfuhr.1 7. Source stated. that tank sheds were built in the military Installation east of the railroad station by prisoners of the Stuhm prison. He believed that tanks for one battalion were in this installation in May J1952x, Three concrete shelters, in which ammunition was believed to be stored, were built into a rather steep slope which had almost the form of a ridge and was located between the east end the west section of the installation. Most of the young tank soldiers serving in Stuhm on active duty wore grey blue cloth uniforms with long trousers, leggings and laced shoes. 8. Prior to May 1952, about 700 prisoners of the Stutms.prison worked in the motor vehicle repair shop which was located in the north section of the prison and was called a base shop. Up to 200 vehicles of the different types in need of repair, including ;American built trucks and jeeps as well as Soviet and. German made motor vehicles of all types , were sometimes waiting for repair. Repaired vehicles were picked up by civilians or Polish soldiers. The shop was equipped with machine tools for making spare paste. 9. No Soviet troops or offices were stationed in Stuhmm prior to May 19520 25X1 G Ln R?s+~ Pp sh tank unit is confirmed prior to May 19520.
