Even many of the Communists of long-standing, particularly those who worked clandestinely during the last war, have lost faith. They are regarded by the new party leaders as forming a dangerous group, as they claim to be the only true Communists and disagree in certain respects with the present party line. Several of them have been purged and expelled from the party. Nevertheless, the continual Communist propaganda, particularly 25X1 in the sphere of social conditions, is having its effect among some of the workers. One thing that has impressed them is that they have more equality of opportunity and there is less official corruption than under the old regime. It is noticeable also, that the average person, even in remote country districts, .is beginning to take a greater interest in international events. The introduction of unpopular measures and the increase of Soviet influence were usually coupled with their naves, and they. have never been regarded as true Rumanians except by a minority of fanatical Party members.
