2, Crushed limestone is produced in three qualities: fine for the rubber and
dye industries and for artificial fertilizer; medium for tar paper and road
building; and coarse for the glass industry.' Four thousand tons of lime-
stone are crashed-annually at Racosul de Joe; 2,000 tons at Turda; 2,000 tons
at Sinaia; 3,000 tons at Bucharest; and 4,000 tons elsewhere.
Rumania's annual production of cement is 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 tons, divided
as follows: 400,000 tons at Turda; 60,000 tons at Dej; 200,000 tons at Stalin;
200,000 tons at Titan, Bucharesti 60,000 tons at Cernavoda; 60,000 tons at
Azuga; and 200,000 tons at Fieni.,
4. The following stone quarries are known:
a, Turda: limestone quarry in the.Turda Mountains, eight to ten kilometers
from Turda. The quarry; originally called Kiraly, was taken over by the
government from the Solvay Works. Its annual production is approximately
1,500,000 tons.
b. Stalin: basalt quarry in the Racos Mountains, near the Racosul de Jos
railroad station. Number of workers varies from 400 to 800, Daily
production is 400 to 600 tons of gravel, 170 to 200 tons of 7 x 9 centi-
meter paving stones, and 20 to 40 tons of 18 x 18 centimeter paving stones.
c. Poetii (Cluj): granite quarry near the Poeni railroad station. Production
of first-class granite is similar to that at Stalin,
d. Turcoaia (Dobrogen on the Danube): granite quarry. The daily production
of approximately 200 tons is shipped by boat.
e, Malnas (near Tusnad=Stalin): granite quarry. Daily production is 200
tons of broken stone, and the principal consumer is CFR (Rumanian Railroads).
f. Rusca Montana (former property of Bibel): marble quarry. Annual production
of pink and white marble.is_10,000 tons. Approximately 50 percent of this
figure is exported, principally to Hungary*
g. Oradea.- marble quarry located 30 to 40 kilometers from Oradea. Annual
production of white, pink, and yellow marble is 2,000 t6 3,000 tons.
he Buzau: sandstone quarry. The product, yellow sandstone, is used as a
substitute for marble.
Rumania's annual production pf:gypeum is 30,000 to 35,000 tons, divided as
follows: 20,000 tons at-Turda; 3,000 to 49000 tons at Aghires (Cluj); 1,000
to 2,000 tons at Comarmic; and 3,000 tons at Bucharest. A portion of the
production at Aghiree is sent to Hungary.
Rumania's daily production of soapstone is 20 tons, about half of which is ex-
ported for electrical and insulation materials. Soapstone 25X1
is quarried at Rusca-Montana (two mines), Hunedoara, and Deva,
