Approved For Release 2003/08/06 : CIA-RDP80-0081OA000900780010-6 CLASS WICA'rl`)A$ W`F U INFURNIATIUN REPORT CD NO. COUNTRY East Germany SUBJECT Radar Training of the 1st Volkspolizel Air Divisioa. 25X1 C DATE D STR. 17 April 1953 NO. OF PAGES NO. OF ENCLS. SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. 25X1X In early February 1953, the radar training of the V? Pir Division was con. ducted with the aid of a radar set, the type. of which could not be deter- mined, which had been furnished by the Russians. I The effectiveness of the radar set is dependent on the number, type, alti- tude and distance of the aircraft, as well as to the position of aircraft and radar station. The following data were given: Altitude of Aircraft Range of Radar 2,,000 'meters 4,000 r eters 6,000 meters 8,000 meters 65 kilometers 100 kilometers 120 kilometers 150 kilometers 3,, The area of the radar set has to be cleared from all obstacles which might interfere with the relays (radiation) of the waves, at a radius of 5C0 to 600 meters. 4. The average error in measurer?ent at an azimuth angle of 2 degrees amounts 700 meters. Taking bearings to altitudes below 4,00C met-a!rs the error in i2easurement is ? 300 meters, and to altitudes between 4,000 and 09000 meters - 500 meters. 5. Power supply.. Alternating current 50 cycles, 220 volts 25X1A 6. Operation. During sumr!er months, four hours are required to erect the radar set, and during the winter months, six hours are required for the procedure. The set is ready for operation 3 to 5 r^inutcs after it has been turned on. The starting tire of the generator is three minutes in surrrrer and 5 to 8 minutes in winter. Fuel consumption of the generator: 335 ra ms gasoline and 17 granms oil per hp per hour. After six hours of continuous operation, a second generator has to be turned on.l ] I1 Comr.ent, it is believed that the data given refer to the approximate figures of the Pumbo or SCR-602 radar sets'. The average error in measurement is probably toy-high, while the fre- quency range of the receiver is Yelieved to be too small.. The trsining was performed in connection with early warning stations.
