1. Carlos CASTiiO Saavedra, Alin poet, is scheduled to attend the Cultural
Congress in Santa ago, Chile, during ipr it 1953. CAST O is now director of
the cultural extension department of the Universidad Libre in Bogota, and has
organized a series of lectures there by professors of_ distinct. political ten-
dencies. The first meeting was conducted by Luis IAP1 de Mesa, Liberal
medical doctor, and other speakers have included Father Rudesindo LOPM
L7 eras and Diego I IITARL Cuellar. In this CAST1) has been able to
give the lectures the arance of being designed solely for cultural ends,
but the real purpose is to give persons like NCB an opportunity to spread
Co'mmist prapagan& publicly without the danger of encourrt~ering official
interference. CASTW attended the Democratic 'Youth festival in astern
G in 1950 and has been active -in the support of Com .st-front groups
in Colotebia.
2. Luis V.IDALES will also represent Colombia at the Santiago conference.

affairs and enjoys the confidence of Party leaders.

but belong to those ' st grows which are regarded favorably by inter-

an nilitant members of the Party are known to the authorities and are watched.
On the other hand, those Intellectuals who are not active], identified with
the Party are free to carry on Co st activities without interference.
