Medical Schools, Hospitals,,, and Clinics
1. The ISUL (Institut za Spetsializatsiya i Tsuvu'rshenstvuvane na Lekarite Kadri;
Physicians Specialization and Finishing Institute) is located at No. 8 Cherno More
Street in Sofia. Until 1948, this was the Rabotnicheska Bo]nitsa (Workers, Hospi-
tal).
2a The special sohoo1 for Military Medical Assistants admits men between the ages of
20 and 4 and offers a course of 2-years duration. Upon graduation,, the students
receive the rank of sergeant-major. Most graduates are assigned to the Army,, but
a small number are sent to villages which have no physician.
3. The Aleksandrovska Hospital now has two depar?enents,, and a third is under con-
struction. The hospital serves as the University Clinic.
Ii:. A nursest school is attached to the Aleksandrovsks, Hospital.. The course lasts two
years, and students are admitted up to the age of 25.
'a The Klementinska Hospital, located near the railroad stationg has a surgical ward
only.
In Sofia, there are 18 general dispensaries and five or six dental clinics.
7. The Government has a 16=car ho spital t rain which includes an- operating rooms a
pharmacy, and a food depot. Its staff consists of a surgeon, a specialist in
internal diseases, four nurses, and two medical assistants.
Drug Supply and Production
The Central Drug Depot is located at No. 22 Washington-Street in Sofia. The
building, which is a large., 5-story., concrete building, is 60 by 80 meters in

staffs of all the departments-(sic). There are two other drug depots in Sofia,
as followss
a. The drug depot of the Bulgarian Red Cross, located at No. 10 Totleben Street;
and
b. A small drug and instrument depot located near the Aleksandrovska Hospita?4 this
depot is attached to the Military Hospital and issues sterilizing materials..
9. The Institut za Narodno Zdrave (Institute of Public Health), located at No.
26 General Zaymov Street in Sofia, produces Lissa and diphtheria sera.
10. A factory which is to produce biochemical drugs is reported to be under construc-
tion at Dimitrovgrad (N 142-'03, E 25-35).

llo In 19109 the dental clinic located at No. 48 Stalin Street (formerly Tsaritsa
Yoanna Street) in Sofia was converted to the first'stomatological institute in
Bulgarian The institutes, in addition to treating pAtients_, _da?s dental research.
All innovations in the dental fields, including drugs, materials, ena instruments
are subjected to study before being released throughout the country. All dental
literature must be approved by the institute before distribution.
12. The institute has recently conducted research into the qualities of phosphate'
cement of Bulgarian manufacture, resin, and small motors for dentists' drills.
These motors are produced by an electrical equipment and medical instrument
factory the Nadezhda district of Sofia,
.d a # . professor of the Sofia Faculty of Dentistry directs the institute. The
staff consists of 14 dentists and eight nurses. There are departments tor -iiirgei?y,,
dentures, general therapy, and X-ray work. A.lOmbed ward for research concerning
special diseases is attached to the institute.
14. Most of the equipment and instruments are of fcr?eign origin, and consist of the
fo'ilowings
a. Probes, imported from the USSR and bearing Soviet labels, are of German
manufacture;
