In 1940, Ardenne received a prize of 50,000 rubles. Ostensibly this prize
was Awarded for new developments on the electron microscope, but it was
rumored amohg the Germans that this was terely an elegaht .way to pay for
Ardennes laboratory. Until that time, Ardenne had maintained that the
laboratory, which;,he:tbrohAht with hii 'f rom iBbrlin-Liohter tilde in 1945,
settled the matter this way rather than entering a discussion with Ardenne
about legal ownership.

The following personnel left Ardenne in 1951:
a. Dr. Max Steenbeck - he is known to have met Prof. Max VQ1lmer3 in
Moscow and is believed to have worked on isotope separation (mechanical).
b. Herr Dames?(fnu) - originally employed by the German Ministry of
Propaganda. Dames"joined the Ardenne group when Ardenne needed a
photography specialist because he had the entry "film section" in
his Phi records. It is not believed that he ever took any research
pictures while with Ardenne, but he was useful in holding school
for the German children.
c.. Dr. Haren (fnu)4 - an MD prisoner-of-war.
d. Dr. Stendel
4 Dr. Thiessen was known to be with Ardennestill in 1951 when he met several
Germans in Moscow. He"stated then that he was working in libraries and
institutions in Moscow. At the same time, he,mentioned that the installa-
tions at the Ardenne Institute were very good, "as good as any KNI".
5. The Moscow collection and transit camp for German scientists was at
Osyeri (phonetic spelling), southwest of Moscow. This place was built
originally by a rich Russian merchant and was in fact a large-villa with
two brick lions at the entrance. At some time before-the war, it had
been the residence of Yagoda; and,,after his downfall, the buildings were
taken over by the NKVD. Immediately after the war, it,was General Paulus'
residence. After he"left, it was returned to the NKVD, which used it
as a transit camp for German scientists. All Germans in the camp were
particularly warned never to mention its name or location anywhere.
The following persons resided there in 1947 or 194 s
a. Prof. Schindlmeister (fnu)' - a nuclear physicist from Vienna; he
worked in'Moscow in an institute that had an unusually large number
of guards.

c. Dr. Bewilogua {-fnu)7- Vollmer's assistant.
d. Dr. Richter (fnu) - a pupil of Prof. Becker. in Leipzig and Vollmer's
assistant.
e. Dr. Beierl (fnu) - a physico-chemist; worked with Hartek8
during the war.
f. An assistant (name unknown) to Bewilogua - worked with Linde
Eismaschinen during the war'on low temperatures by liquification
and on V-2; he died in 1949.

g. Prof. Kronenberg (fnu)9 - was believed to have received his professor-
ship from Prof, Robert Rompe after the war. He was a convinced
Communist who used his political status for non-cooperation.
'Eventually, the man seems to have overtaxed-Sbviet patience, because
he suddenly disappeared. His field was reportedly uranium fluorites.
