(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) 25X1 1e, Prior to July 1948 the following Freemason's lodges existed in Rumania: Fourteen in Bucharest, one at Arad, one at Stalin (Brasov), one at Timisoara, a one at Constantaa and one at Iasi. Together they had a total of 1,860 members. In July 1948 the lodges decided to disband, after a warning by Ana Pauker that otherwise they would be dissolved and all members ' arrested. During the first currency reform a total of 100 million lei was paid into the National Bank by the various lodges, but there were no funds left at the time the lodges were disbanded. Furniture was divided among the members* 2., There were'no'secret lodges in Rumania. Members of the Grand Conseil lodge conanunicated by moans of a telephone code. No details are known. 3. Up to August 1950 no freemasons were arrested as suchq but persons accused of economic sabotage received more severe sentences if they admitted that they had been freemasons. Since 1950 about 360 frearnasons -have been arrested, of whom the following are known: a. Bellu, an engineer, and a member of the Board of the Mica Mining Ca party in Bucharest, be Ciupercescu, general manager of the commercial department of the Rumanian Railways (CFR),t c. Alecu Grigoriu, president of the Engineers' Association. d. Cociup chief accountant for the late King Carol. e. Artareanu, general manager of the Creditul Minior Oil Compaxay in Bucharest. f. He was said to have ,; committed suicide, but he is believed to have been killed because he continued to communicate with his former freemason superiors after he had joined the Communist Party. h. Cioc, manager of Mamaia, a summer resort at the Black Sea. He escaped by leaving the train in Buzau, after he had been warned by a brother, before he could be arrested in Bucharest. He is said to have joined the partisans in the mountains near Buzau. The former members of the Grand Conseil lodge are said to be in touch with an orgainzation prepared for active sabotage in the event of war. No details are known., ? f S y SECRET/CONTROL -.
