On.1 January 1951 the newly activated Border Guard (Pohranioni straz - PS) (Sbor narodni bezpeonosti - SNB) unit The SUB border guard unit then reverted to the status of a regular police unit. -SNB police functions consisted of combating the black market, directing traffic, enforcing law and order, and other police work in- cluding fire-fighting. The SNB did no intelligence work whatsoever. Its main headquarters was in Prague and there were also regional head- quarters and stations in each village with a population of more than 1,000. Members of the SNB were in uniform at all times. its personnel numbered about 3,000 officers and enlisted men and it had ~..y, approximately 3,000 pistols, 3,000 SMGs, 6,000 grenades, 3,000 pairs of handourrs, and 200 LMGs. L 25X1 25X1 25 YEAR RE-REVIEW ' Approved For Release 2009/04/13: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA001200450003-6 Approved For Release 2009/04/13: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA001200450003-6 SECRET/SECURITY INFORMATION -2- (1) A platoon had the following equipment: (a) 1 Skoda Tudor (similar to the US Jeep) (b) 2 - 3 Jawa motorcycles (c) 2 - 3 Bicycles (d) 2 Pairs of binoculars (6 x 30), made by Optika Techna or Meopta (post World War II) (e) 2 LMGs, model VZ26 (kept in the supply room) (f) Some platoons had two to three dogs. (2) Each member of the platoon had a German 9-mm Parabola or PArabellum pistol, a model 25 SMG, two T-34 grenades, and a pair of handcuffs. SIN men had no gas 25X1 masks or regular army personal equipment. Until the Sumer of 1950, each man carried with him his pistol with 25 rounds and his SMB with 200 rounds of ammunition. In the Summer of 1950 the system was changed and weapons and ammunition were issued only to men going on duty. (3) One man of the platoon was called a preventive service man (Organ ?reventivny aluzby - OPS); his function was to have informants discover potential border crosses and to interrogate those suspected border oroesers' who were caught. ?b. SNB companies were composed of two, three, and sometimes four platoons, depending on the stretch of border they had to patrol. One officer and two NCOs were in a company headquarters. The company's strength was 50 - 100 men. Three or four of the men were operations men. Each company had the following equipment: 0- 100 pistols, 50 100 SMGe, 100 - 200 grenades, and 4 - 8 LMGs. ,. 0. There were 40 officers and enlieted.men in the headquarters of an SNB battalion. 25X1 battalion consisted of about 50 officers and 600 enlisted men; The s ervioe company was composed of 25X1 three platoons axed ash platoon had 40 men.
