The Geological Committee
1. The Geological Committee is in charge of explorations of oil fields, mineral
deposits, and coal mines, and is under the direct control of the Council of
Ministers. The Committee has offices at Calea Victoriet No. 126, Bucharest,
2. At the end of 1951 the Committee, with all its subordinate organizations,
employed from 1,000 to 1,100 clerks and workers.
3? Up to May or June of 1951 the Committee directed and supervised all activities
connected with oil and mineral exploration. After that date some decentral-
ization took place and new bodies were created. These new units, however,
remained under the control of the Committee.

ISEia s activities are restricted to experimental drilling at sitea which
have been indicated by the prospecting section. If drilling ie successful,
exploitation of the mine or oil field is transferred to the appropriate
Ministry,
6. The following tools and materials are used' at drilling eitesa
Derricks, rotary tables, lathes, and_square, heavy drilling rode. The
USSR is the source of this equipanent,
b. Electrically and manually operated drills, pnewnatic hanner?, diesel and
electric motors, mechanical pumps, Z13 trucks manometers, and other
precision instruments. The USSR, Czechoelova4a, and Hungary are the
sources of this equipment*
c. Gas masks
Special cement for drills, building cement, iron for reinforced concrete,
pipes, welding rods, reinforcing and construction timber, cool and brass
cables, dynamite,, astralite, hcxametaphosphate,and trans-gel for stiffen-
ing loose strata.
7. ISEE did work on approximately one hundred sites in 1951, Fixed dills were
used on 68 sites and portable drills on the r,mainder, sites included the
following:
a. Caransebes Nou (Severin District), probably coal
b. Grozesti (Bacau District), salt
c. Rosati (Valcea District), probably coal
d. Filipesti de Padure (Prahova District),, oil or cdal
e. Valea Fierului (Transylvania), iron
f. Padurea Craiului (Transylvania), iron
g. Campulung Moldovenesc
h. Moinesti. (Bacau District), oil.
