OFFICIALS ONLY SECURITY INFORMATION COUNTRY USSR (Ukrainian SSR) Aircraft Observed in the Kiev-Darnitsa Area THE SOURCE EVALUATIONS IN THIS REPORT ARE DEFINITIVE. THE APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. (FOR KEY SEE REVERSE) During the winter of '1951-1952, air activity in"the Kiev--Darnitsa :(N 50-25, E 30-'30) area was slight. In early April 1952 yen mid-wing..jet fighters, with swept-back wings, approached W cam from the southeast. These aircraft were the first jet plane~ 71 They had no step in the fuselage, and were fitted with an elevator assembly set rather high. Other PW's at the camp believed that these planes were stationed at Borispol airfield (N 50-22, E 30.55),,1 The 'jet planes crossed the field only on low-level flights. No firing practices, attacks on air sleeves, parachute jumps, AAA firing, or searchlight activity were observed.. The planes usually flew in forma- tions of three to twelve aircraft. 2. On each day between 12 and 24 May, from three to;ten jet aircraft (usually four or five) crossed PW camp 'a'pproaching from the 25X1 area east and southeast of K;Lev-Darnitsa. The het craft were mid-wing monoplanes with tapering wings, a step in the fuselage, and a single- rudder assembly with an elevator assembly set about in the middle of the. rudder assembly: The aircraft observed had one engine, and bulges for machine guns and cannons were observed on both sides of the fuselage.`, The planes flew at low or medium altitudes at an even rate of speed.. No firing practice or ground-air activities. were observed.2 /` Comment,. The planes seen were MIG-15# and appear to 25X1 have been stationed at Borispol airfiel , which was improved in 19+7-19+8,.
