COUNTRY USSR (.Gulf of Finland) SUBJECT. Soviet Destroyer in the Gulf of Finland PLACE ACQUIRED Comment This shorter mast is probably a staff located on the after section of the fantail. 21 May 1953 1. A Soviet warship leaving Roger Wiek (N 59-20, E 24+-00) was sighted at about 1300 hours on 30 January 1953, ship was on her way from Abo (N 60-28, E 22-22) to Helsinki. The warship, at a distance of about five or six sea miles.' It was between 100 and 110 meters long, and had a raked bow-* and two guns, one above the ., other, which were either behind shields or in enclosed turrets on her foredeck. The mast was behind her low bridge structure; aft of this mast was a low, very squat funnel with smoke hood. There was a shorter mast on the forward section of her long fantail.2 There were several uniden- tified structures between the short mizzen mast and the aft.guns, which were superimposed. and fitted with protective shields or were enclosed in turrets as were those on the foredeck. It had a-plumb stern.1 The vessel could not be approached more closely, as ship was pro- ceeding along'the, outermost limits of the swept channel.. 2.. The destroyer made a straight run toward the northwest coast of Nargoe -' ~ 4-3o), opening fire with her two "orwar guns shore targets were fired upon, no targets or other at sea and no splashes on the surface'of the water. After firing about eleven consecutive salvos", during which dark gray powder smoke from the destroyerYs guns but no shell bursts on the island., the destroyer turned away toward the Baltic coast.
