SEMVCONTHOA- U.S. OFFICIALS ONLY SE RITY INFO AVON COUNTRY SUBJECT Rumania Textilia Clothing Stores, Bucharest REPORT NO. DATE DISTR. 29 May 1953 NO. OF PAGES 2 25X1A REQUIREMENT NO. RD PLACE ACQUIRED Centrocomtextil, Bucharest, controls several stores which sell rationed and unrationed ready-made clothing and underwear. The following shops of this kind are known: a, Textilia (formerly Cehoslovaca on the former Boulevard Elisabeta, Bucharest* b. Textilia (formerly Cehoslovaca)) on Strada Selari, Bucharest. This store has 22 salesmen in addition to the manager. c. Magazin Popular, on Calea Victories, Bucharest. d. Magazin Popular formerly Sora) on Calea Victoriei, Bucharest* e. Magazin Popular formerly flora) on Calea Grivitei, Bucharest* f. Magazin Popular formerly Atanasiu-Vulturul de Mare) on Calea Mosilor, Bucharest. Each store has separate departments for rationed clothing for men, women and children and for unrationed clothing and underwear. Ments suits are manufactured by OheorghiusDej (formerly Apaca), Bucharest-Cotroceni, a factory with more than 10,000 workers. Overcoats and suits are made by Cootexi.(Cooperativa lucratorilor de umbracaminte, Workers' Clothing Cooperative), Oradea. Women's clothes are made by Confectia, Sibiu. In 1951 Textilia at Strada Solari, Bucharest, sold, on an average per month, 2 million lei of rationed suits for men, 1,500,000 lei of rationed clothing for women and children. The sales plan for rationed goods was fully carried out as prices are low,,but that for unrationed goods was not reached. Between 1950 and 1952 prices rose 30 percent while quality deteriorated. A rationed suit which sold for 5,200 lei in 1950 was sold for 7,200 lei in 1952, and after stabilization a suit of poorer quality sold at 360 lei. A reduction of 10 percent was given because the factories produced more cheaply as the plan was fully carried out. 5. Because materials are not made of either pure wool or cotton, clothing wears out quickly, and complaints are frequent. 25X1A SECRET/CONTROL - U.S. OFFICIALS ONLY Approved For Release 2001/11/21: CIA-RDP80-008;10A001300410001-1 25X1A SECRET/CONTROL ..
