1e During the year 1951 new regulations were issued for the Safety Arrange-
mants Service of the Hungarian State Railways (T). MAT Official Gszetta
!c. 72/1951
2. On 29 November 1951.a general conference of all directorates of MAT
was held at Budapest. At this conference the modernization of the safety
arrangements and of the telegraphic service was discussed,
the following points being mentionedt
a. By 1954 an effects i -,"twork for the central office of the Traffic
Direction Service ((f) was to` be set up, for the whole of Mary
(a central direction and control of the railway traffic, devolving
onto the service for traffic direction or travel direction.)
be For this purpose a new central office was to be inaugurated at the
begirm1nt of 1952 on the premises of the Budapest directorate, The
apparatus were entirely up-to-date. and were located in several
adjacent roams in this building,
a. The most up-to-date arrangements., oommunioation wires etc., for this
central office were to be constructed first of all for that

d. The largest telephone vohange of NAV had already been inaugurated in 1951
on the premises of the Bntapest directorates MAV had never bad so large
and up-to-date a telephone exchangeas this one.
e. For the larger shunting stations, twenty-five wireless telephone sots
with ultra.-abort wave, had been converted as . locomotive radio sets.
The experiments on the BudapestFbrenov&ros shunting station were as
good as completed.
f. At Tapoloa a central radio. and telewriter office had been set up. It
also served the purpose of the traffic direction service*
g. On the iii6f ok - Balatonbogldr line several new eleatro-dynamio station
oafety-devices had been successfully tried out. The devices were $'itted
to insulated points. The only disadvantage of such devices lay 1n the
fact that careless engine-drivers often blow cinders down on to those
points. These cinders fall on to the insulation, become wet by re.son of
rain of snow and cause short circuiting, so that the signals on trio tracks
show signs as if a train were approaching. Another difficulty arose
through the cutting off of current Frequently effected on urban
eleotrioal networks. In such contingencies the points had to be operated
by hand. In order to obviate this difficulty, motor-engines, rum on
gasoline had been installed for these stations and, during a current
stoppages were met in operation to produos electricity*
h. Also, for the station Budapest - EeienfOld and Nyiregyh&sa, eleotttow
dynamic devices were being set up (See point g).
i. The entire operations here mentioned were being carried out under the
direction of a depax-tmental head in the general directorate, Imre
Smetty.
S. From this, as also from another article, in the periodical Ssooalista
Va.utert (For the Socialist Railway) intensive efforts are s ng lid e
o speed up this modernization, The work is hampered by certain
difficulties. These are as folldwee
Re a, a, and ht Shortage of matgrial for the wiring.
Re ei The Hungarian radio industry lacks sufficient experience for the
manufacture of such radio sets. As to importing them - there is not
enough of the Necessary foreign currency available.
ga The gasoline-run motor engines have long been on order but art
still not delivered.
to a, a, and hr The Telefon it (Hungarian Telephone Factory) is always
in arrears with regard to its deliveries, every eleatroodyramie set
being overdue when delivered.
With regard to these operations a very characteristic defeat has been
mentionedi
eMeasuring tapes bought through the Materials Bureau differ in length,
.,It has happened that 2-meter length measuring tales have been shorter
by 22 mm. than a normal, accurate measuring tape .

*e a. The central office of the traffic direction service or travel.
ON=" direction service was a military institution of the second World
War, which functioned very well. The main office, then as now,
was a concrete cellar of the Budapest Beneral directorate at 8stelin n..75-75.
Re c. As far as it is known, the traffic direction service is stilt:

Re ea It is thought that the no-Galled locomotive wireless sets for the
directors of the travel servioe were intended for the eventuality of
the telephone wires being damaged and unusable,
Re fa During the seoond World War a few wireless sets were bought for
the Military Traffic Oireotion Service (ES$VXX Eszpo:kti Szdllitdsvezet8sdg).
Of these a few have remained in workable condition.. For this purpose
MAV bought the wireless tranemit{3er+, type AS 33a with wave-length 300-
3000. Similar note are now built aooording to this pattern.
