SECRET/CONTROL - U.S. OFFICIALS ONLY SECURITY INFORMATION COUNTRY Bulgaria SUBJECT Miscellaneous Military Information from the Silistra Area PLACE ACQUIRED A Communications Corps unit consisting of approximat'e1y-500 men, including 50 officers, is located in the southeastern outskirts ' of Silistra. This unit is commanded by a colonel and includes six, or seven majors, approximately 20 captains, and other officers of lower rank. .2. There are two officers$ schools in the compound of this unit, one training Communicatioms Corps officers and other training Cavalry officers. 3. The Communications Corps school admits men with at least a secondary education after one year of service in a oomnunic ations unit. The curriculum at this school is two years and each class has 60 students who receive the rank of second lieutenant upon completion of the course. The instructors are for the most part engineer- officers and they have at their disposal receiver and transmitter installations. This school is commanded by the same Bulgarian.colonQl who is in command of the Communications Corps unit. The school also holds regular refresher courses for reserve officers sent there by the various commands. The courses last 90 days and include 60 days study at the school and 30 days training in,an artillery unit stationed in Silistra. The Cavalry officers school admits men with two years service in a cav4ry unit such, ao'the one stationed in.Silistra, The course lasts one year and each class includes 30 students. Upon completion of the course, graduates receive the rank of second lieutenant and are then transferred to a cavalry unit. The school is commanded by Colonel 4rigorov (fnu), a Bulgarian. 5? The headquarters of the Border Guards for the Bulgarian tumanian frontier sector, which rues from Silistra approximately 50 kilometers toward Dobrich, are located approximately 500 meters egst of the Communications Corps compound in Silistra.
