The TKZS (Trudovo Kooperativno Zemedelsko Stopanstvo; Cooperative Farm) at Silistra, the management of which is housed on the western outskirts of the town has 200 members and owns 500 hectares of land. The number of members has not increased since its establishment in 1945. Since 1952 the amount of land has been increased when several dozen peasants yielded their land without compensation to the local council because they either could not or would not fulfill the high quotas imposed on them. They preferred to go into industry. The TKZS does not have enough labor for the cultivation of the entire area and hires between 30 and 50 laborers by the day. 3. A large state farm is..located on the Ruse highway approximately four kilometers from Silistra. ,It includes an agricultural school with about 100 students. 4. An agricultural machine and tractor station (MTS) has been established on the Ruse highway two kilometers from Silistra. It has 20 to 25 combines, 30 to 40 tractors and some other machines. 5. Electricity is sup,.Lied to Silistra from Rumania via Ruse, and from Varna. There are four transformers at different points. Severe power shortages have occurred since work was begun on the construction of the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge. Work proceeds on the bridge day and night. In March 1953 construction was still in progress only near the banks on either side of the Danube. 6. About 650 meters from the Sideri flour mill, on the banks of the Danube, there are 12 iron fuel tanks: with an average height of ten meters, and set approxi- mately 30 to 40 meters apart. The fuel is brought from Ruse by tankers or trucks. 7. Silistra port, unchanged in the past.few years, has two piers: one for passenger boats plying between Silistra and Ruse., and one for freight vessels. There are no loading cranes. The only building of importance is a large ten-story grain silo which is equipped with sorting machinery and an elevator but has no direct loading chutes for barges. The port has no dock facilities, and vessels go to Ruse harbor for repairs. 8. The Specturg (Specialna Turgovia; Special Commerce) shops formerly catered to the families of regular Arrrr officers and to civilians employed by the Army. Since May 1952, when rationing of food and clothing ended, these shops have not differed from other state shops and now serve the public as a whole.
