1. On 24 November 1952 the Hanyang (N 30-31, E 114-41) Arsenall had about
15,000 workers. K'ai xssu-chi (0418/1795/1133/2448/1015), Soviet
ordnance expert, was head of the technical section. German, Japanese,
Soviet, and Czechoslovakian technicians were employed by the arsenal.
The plant was producing 75-mm. shells. During the months of June, July,
and August 100,000 shellb':were produced. The production of machine guns
had been increased by 42'percent over the production for the first six months
of the year. The plant was planning production of 81-mm. mortars, 4.2-inch
howitzers and field pieces. New workshops had been erected in Wuchang and
production was speeded up to meet the heavy demand. All arms produced
were consigned to the Combined Supply Section of the Central and South China
Military Area Command.
2. In late December 1952, the Chinese Communists were planning to start the
construction of a large sulphuric acid factory at Lanchou (N 36-03, E 103-
41) in the autumn of 1953. The factory was to be completed by October 1954.
In December the Chinese Communists were recruiting engineers for this project.
3. On 15 September the xuehyang (N 29-28, E 113-12) Water Front Boat Control
Office received instructions from the hsien public security bureau to coman-
deer 30 boats. The boatmen were ordered to transport 500 cases of large
chin and parts from Hankow by way of Yuehyang to Chingshih (N 29-38,
111 'O for installations in a vegetable oil refinery.
